We used to have a gas log fireplace in the basement. When we took it out, an entertainment center was put in its place with the gas pipe just capped and hidden behind the furniture.

Now that I'm getting ready to sell, I need to deal with it. There is a shut off valve on the pipe as it comes into the house.

Can I just turn off the flow to this pipe, cut it off outside the the house, then cap it? Given that it's gas, is this a 'better pay a pro' job?

Yeah what he said.

Messing with gas isn’t really all that dangerous if you just use some common sense.

Put pipe dope on the Threads of the plug or cap and all will be fine.

Think of it the same way you would a water pipe. You need to get a good seal so it Doesn’t leak.

If you’re worried about whether or not you’ve got a good seal just pour a little soapy water over the cap or plug. If it bubbles tighten it some more.

what they said go to lowes and get a 1/2" black iron plug and a roll of Teflon tape . turn off valve and take pipe loose wrap plug threads with tape and insert in shutoff valve . tighten with wrench

make sure you wrap Teflon tape in proper direction on threads call me if you have any questions

Cap it. If you can make parts look like a scary assault weapon of mass destructodeath and not put your eye out, you are qualified to play with gas pipe.

You haven't even had to call in the fire department or made a visit to the emergency room yet. it's not even CLOSE to time to "call the man"

“The man” for gas pipe is a plumber. If you were putting in new pipe then maybe worth it to have his insurance cover any problems, but for this just do it.

Look for the yellow teflon tape, it's specifically made for gas lines.

Or you could leave it as an option for the new homeowners to have gas logs or a backup gas heater.

I had my gas company come out and do that twenty years ago when I removed gas logs from a fireplace. I can’t recall if they even charged me.

The good old days, PSNC founders son Zeigler sold out to SCANA and then was acquired by Dominion. All about the money now.
Get a can of blue spray paint and give the gas line two light coats to make it look official.

Taking it out will leave a hole outdoors and in sheetrock. Put a cover over the sheetrock hole and market it as plumbed for ventless gas logs.
