Repatriating 86,000 M1 Garands

i heard in the video about 5m for 'delousing' and the ship to bring em over... 58bux each ......

The CMP magazine had a story two issues ago, they had rifles packed 10 to a steel drum as shipped from the factory, in storage all these years. They wanted to pull them and toss them in wood crates to save on shipping the drums.

Nice video. Cool to see HRA's first production rifle!

While it will be nice to have these rifles back into circulation through the CMP, I suspect that most of them will have seen home hard abuse or neglect. Prices will probably be on-par with current offerings: maybe a bit higher for them to re-coup some of the importation costs.

I'd love to see what other kinds of hidden gems they find in those boxes.

If the prices for the 1911s are any indication then those gonna be close to 2 grand

Oh didn’t watch the video so idk if my response is fitting or not

I would imagine these get treated as every other repatriated Garand has been in the past; graded per the CMP standard and sold as such. These days probably in the $700 range or so. Cheaper than they can be had at the gun show or in the BST section, honestly.

That was a fantastic video, appreciate the post.

I do take some issue with the stewardship of our M1s that foreign governments have had over the decades. Interesting microcosm of US aid in general: manufacture the rifles, donate the rifles, watch the receiving country fail to effectively employ the rifles (either not use them, abuse them in practice or storage-or have the rifles captured by gang like “insurgents”), and at long last pay millions of dollars to repatriate the rifles back to America where they can be properly cataloged and stored. And I would imagine many in Congress or certain less free US states would be in horror that the such a great agency like the CMP even exists...

I would hope that all our friends on this forum obtain one of these, if nothing else just to be able to say that they’d be better cared for in our homes than they were during a mission when we tried to “help” a foreign nation...

If priced appropriately, I may consider buying another. M1's are amazing pieces of hardware. JCG was one heck of a engineer.

Everyone should own at least one... At minimum, all should shoot one at least once. You need to experience the "ping".

From what I saw in the video and pictures, a lot of them appear to be in horrendous shape. How would they price those items?

They have this down to a science.

Good barrel, good chamber, good wood = service grade or better
Bad barrel and/or chamber, beat up wood = field grade or parts
Good barrel, good chamber, bad wood = special grade with their CMP wood

Once they categorize them, offices are pre-defined. Prices subject to change of course.

If they call them "special" or "unique" with some sort of new category, they'll create an equally new price.

My guess is that them go with the standard category and pricing.
