10-14 LE trade in. $300 for the gun, how can you say no?!

Tonight's installment of "what's on the night stand" features a 3" Model 64 purchased from a forum member a few weeks ago. It has a great trigger. I'll take a 3" K Frame with Hogue grips over most anything else for home defense, hiking, and sometimes concealed carry.

This evening's installment of "What's on the Nightstand"...an early 1990s Model 64 NY-1. If it was good enough to cover Officer Patrick L.'s butt while he patrolled Harlem and Washington Heights, it will be more than adequate here in suburban Charlotte. I have the box for this one and a 2" Model 64 NY-1 from the same NYPD officer. I've posted them before.

Picked this up yesterday. S&W PC XVR 460 7.5" bbl. Just got back from the range and it is a pleasure to shoot! Just as accurate as it's 8 3/8"bbl cousin.
Here it is alone.

With it's XVR big sister:

With the rest of it's slab sided siblings:
Wow. That's quite a collection of heavy firepower. What do you do with something like that? Hunting? Seems like general target practice would get expensive, fast.

I do plan to hunt with it eventually, but I bought it primarily as a backup when bear hunting and hog hunting. It is a lot of fun to shoot and if you reload you can afford to keep it fed!

I've declared that tomorrow will be my No Plastic Day at the range. Unless I decide to run a few founds through my G43. Otherwise, it will be old wood and steel. These range from 1958 to 1971.

Wow! There are lots of really nice revolvers in this thread.

This probably isn't even worth posting, but my wife just got a Heritage "Rough Rider" 6.5" barrel w/ cocobolo grips. She needed a single action revolver just so she could teach any of her potential future students about them. We saw these at the Greenville Gun Show, and liked them. They were the cheapest price, but they still had a good solid feel to them. We had my ffl friend order one, and got it much cheaper than at the show. This one came with the .22LR cylinder, and she will order the mag cylinder.

It's not a bad looking gun, but it will fill the purpose for which she needs it. We haven't fired it yet, but I'm really afraid that we're BOTH going to really like single action revolvers, and this will only lead to bigger and better ones. crying.gif

Yep, @Harold2689 , y'all are hooked now. And, that Heritage is a pretty good gun for the money. A single action rimfire is a lot of fun to shoot.

That it will... totally impractical, but both fun and deadly. I carry one every day that I hunt.

Took it to the range on Wednesday, and we both fired it. It's really a pretty nice gun for just a little over $100, and it's amazingly accurate! It has a smooth trigger, and we both fired it well. She's happy with it, and that makes me happy. She's already ordered the mag cylinder for it.

Yeah, I can see that this could be the start of a whole new fork in the road...

Picked up the big brother (.45) to my .40 Pitbull yesterday. Both in black nitrided finish.

IMG_9119.JPG

And may have just ordered the little brother (9mm), but opted for stainless finish on this one.

40S&W, 45acp... 9mm! Good God man, these are revolvers! You need a proper straight wall cartridge!:D
Yeah, but I already had ammo and semi-autos. Just wanted another way to shoot the same stuff, or carry as a BUG I could reload from a mag.

I have a stainless 2" 6-shot .357 Mag for all my 357/38 needs. :p

Can't blame you there. Still though, a bulldog in 44spl. would make a lovely family addition!

I have been slacking a bit on my contributions to this thread. Have a new little girl ( a/k/a Assistant DA) and we've been getting used to the new routine. But...something good coming this Friday. Bought new 2017 Colt Cobra on Gunbroker. Will arrive at the FFL (Tar Heel State Firearms) on Friday afternoon.

This thread has been painfully stalled since the new addition.

I hope you are enjoying it though!

The New Colt Cobra is here. Just picked it up. Good photos will follow later. Feels great. Like the trigger. Think they could do better engraving the Colt logo. More to follow.

Here it is...the 2017 Colt Cobra. I've been waiting for awhile to get my hands on one of these.

First, I am really pleased to see Colt getting back into the double action revolver game. Sort of afraid that it is too late for them, but we'll see long term. Mechanically the gun feels solid. It locks up tight. Trigger pull is quite smooth all the way through. Impressive, in my view. Sweet single action for those who would shoot a snub that way (not me).

I am on the fence about the fiber-optic front sight. It is useful but sort of ugly. Fortunately, an ugly front sight isn't going to hurt this gun's overall aesthetics. It's a clean looking utilitarian design. The appearance and feel conveys modern CNC production quality but none of that old school hands-on craftsmanship. that sounds unduly critical. Not meant to be. The days of hand polished blued carbon steel are long gone on "production" revolvers. Colt delivered what it promised. A nice little revolver for concealed carry. Matte stainless is perfect for a sweaty waist band. [I understand that a tritium night sight will be available soon from Brownell's]

Hogue grips are great. One of my favorite companys. The Hogue Monogrip is predictably comfortable but, in my opinion, too damned long. We need a boot grip option. That will come soon enough. It appears that old Colt D frame grips DO NOT FIT. Some are close. Might even be able to tweak some to fit okay...but it's not a perfect match.

Going to the range tomorrow. Have not fired it yet. My initial impression is favorable. Only real gripe is the Rampant Colt stamp. It is not done well on any of the Cobra's that I have seen. Note, mine is the only one seen in person. All others were photos. Enough talk...here are some photos.

Here is one of my 1975 Cobras (year I was made) with my / my daughter's 2017 Cobra (year she was made):

Just messing with the grips. It's close to the old Colt Cobra but not exact fit. You might be able to rig some of the older wood grips, not all. It's a "no go" unless you put in some effort.

Here it is stripped down next to an old Detective Special. See how close it is? Damn. Why couldn't they just keep the dimensions the same.

@Prosecutor , nice pictures. The first time I saw a photo of one I thought the grips looked huge for a snub. Those Colt Pachmayrs look right at home on it.

Agreed. Have no idea why they shipped a CCW revolver with the big Hogues. The old Pachys would be perfect if they fit just right. I am going to do a little sanding and trimming. It's close, but the new Cobra frame is a bit thicker in the backstrap. The grip seam does not close all the way. It's close, but not acceptable long term.

Nice...I guess. I'd have to own one and see if I could warm up to it.

One thing I like about it is the fact that Colt made a new DA revolver! I like the Pachmayr Compaq grips on it.

I like the fact it looks somewhat like my Charter Arms Bulldog.

Interesting shape for the trigger guard.

Would have really been nice if the New Cobra was a lightweight like the earlier ones.

What info does one get when scanning the right side?

Not sure about the QR code. Probably serial number, at minimum.

I heard the new trigger guard was to fit gloved hands buy still work with old D frame holsters.

Also, I found that Badger Boot Grips work with a little trimming of the part that comes to rest behind the trigger guard.
