Gotta be a low profile gas block underneath the handguard. But that does raise the question as to why they opted to hang a piece of useless metal near the front of the barrel.

That is part of the system, it is for barrel reference point. These have been on the market for a few years now.

And how does the system work, if the thing on the barrel is part of the system but it's being blocked by the front sight? And where's the REAR IRON SIGHT

A lot of them don't even "like" guns it's just part of the their job to carry it they shoot it on duty and get far away off duty. You'd also be surprised how many military guys are more or less the same way.
