A few questions...I've reviewed the McClure - Volkmer Rule about transportation of firearms in a vehicle, etc. My questions are related to rifles and carrying them in the trunk of a vehicle;

1. If the gun is in the trunk and not loaded and in a case...do the magazines have to be in a separate container or can a different compartment in the bag/case be used and still remain ok? Does it have to be a hard case?

2. Do I have a duty to inform in NC if the rifle is in a case, etc. in the trunk?

3. Does any of this change if i throw in a loaded or unloaded hangun in the bag? I do have a CCW and carry 90% of the time. During that 10% of the time, if i throw it in the bag does that change anything?

4. What other considerations should i make or what am i missing?

5. If you can point me to the written law or anything else for NC that would be most appreciated. I dont care about, "my friend told me once..."

Scenario for me is a get home bag with a rifle and some spare mags. Traveling only in NC and only at permitted locations.

1. No
2. No
3. Only if the handgun is accessible. In the trunk, no.
4. School property. Some of the limited protection a CHP offers does not work with rifles.
5. To start: https://handgunlaw.us/

Others will also have more information....

You can check this but take it with a grain of salt because it clearly states that it is not legal advise for a particular scenario. Page 20 I believe.

North Carolina makes no distinction as to loaded or unloaded. It is still a firearm.
As stated above your CHP does not work for a long gun.
I was told the last time I renewed my permit that even if I am not carrying(or it is in the trunk) I must still notify.
The key to concealed is: out of sight and easily accessible.

Trying to imagine a scenario where anything past the first 2 lines of your post matter, and failing. I routinely have loaded pistols and rifles in the trunk, sometimes while driving, sometimes at the range, sometimes at the airport, occasionally at a school or courthouse.

It did get me in trouble once at the airport, forgot to take the rifles out and went to valet the car, they weren’t amused but I didn’t get arrested, just couldn’t leave the car.

Our local airport terminal (GSO) is clearly posted for no concealed firearms. I once called an on-duty Officer there and asked a couple questions. His answers are below each...

1. May I leave my firearm in the car considering it appears only the terminal is “posted”.
Yes

2. May I open carry in the terminal considering the posting only mentions concealed carry.
Yes...but, if you do so and I don’t happen to be on duty at that moment, don’t be surprised at the response of my colleagues and other airport staff.

I"ll admit, I"m old and country but this one just lost me completely. What is the issue with the long gun?
Because in NC you can legally store one but can’t conceal one. And neither word is defined.

With a concealed carry permit you can open carry or concealed carry a handgun. The carry permit does not apply to long guns, knives, or other such instruments of death and destruction. You can, unless I am dramatically misinformed, open carry or open transport a long gun. You can not conceal carry a long gun. As long as it is carried openly or not concealed in an easily accessible location you should be fine. I generally carry one to several long guns to the farm or range with me every time I go. They generally ride in the passenger seat uncovered and clearly visible. Concealed and inaccessible should be fine. The trunk should be inaccessible, and no locked case should be necessary.

Thank you Waylon. Guess I'd be corrected these days. We used to just throw them in the truck and go. Depended and still does on how many were in the truck as to what went behind the seat. That is a truck, 2 doors, one seat. Seriously, I was lost on the question and just asking...... please carry on and ignore me.

Need to buy pistol lowers and some shorter barrels for my newly formed pistols.
Just make sure they’re properly marked to be extra safe. :D
