I find this interesting. From the Alliant website.

Designed for small caliber varmint loads, it meters consistently and meets the needs of the most demanding bench rest shooter. Great in .45-70 and .450 Marlin.

  • Meters consistently
Seem that they are contradicting themselves.
When did a 45-70 become a varmint gun?

It's common for 45-70 to use fast rifle powder...……. I think...….. when the 45-70 was created, it was a black powder load...…. which I believe........???? burns fast compared to most modern rifle powders.

I think I have some RL7 and 3031 that I have used for both light .243 Winchester and 45-70.

Are we talking about Reloder 7?

Michael, would you use in a Trapdoor? Most of my loads for the Trapdoor are around 1350 ft/sec

I never messed with one, but know that you need to keep pressures very low in those, no pushing the envelope with that..... 1350 is about as max as you want to go with it.............. You can use light doses of IMR 4198 for those loads, anything from 25-28 gr of IMR 4198 makes nice loads for low pressure guns and around 1200-1300 fps depending..........
