Road Map

We have a GPS. And a road atlas, and when we travel we take state maps that are applicable. It's amazing at how inefficient a GPS can actually be.

Driving back from Holden Beach on Monday, traffic on I40 was stopped close to Hwy 42. We whipped out the NC roadmap, and made our way back on back roads. GPS kept trying to redirect on major roads.

While I like GPS, I am a visual guy, so I really like balancing what Garmie (our kid's name for GPS) against a map.

I call my GPS after my nagging bitching , pain in the ass sister in law.

Every time I hear the GPS speak I turn it down.

Wish she had a mute switch.

The Waze app is a little better than most GPS programs and devices I've used. Still, it does have a bias towards certain roads and I've frequently seen it cut both the arrival time and number of miles when I've ignored it and gone the way I prefer.

I still like the Avoid Ghetto feature M$ tried patenting: http://www.npr.org/2012/01/25/145337346/this-app-was-made-for-walking-but-is-it-racist

Of course it was heralded as racist even though it uses violent crime data and helps people avoid areas above a certain threshold.

GPS is just another way of saying "Lying little box o'crap". I'll pick up new maps next time I get by DOT office or rest area. Usually give them away by the dozen.
Thanks
