In my early days of gunsmithing I had two strong influences, one was a master gunsmith named Merle Booth who was a genius at metalwork, the other was Bob Dunlap. Bob was gunsmithing instructor at Lassen College and author of the book"Gunsmithing". He and his book have strongly influenced my working knowledge and style

Recently he has suffered some health issues, and as a result Bob died of complications yesterday. If you could please remember his family and friends during this time. I am sure he will be remembered and missed by many, I know he will be by me...goodbye my friend RIP.

Newbie here. I will properly introduce myself later, but I just have to add a quick comment on this one.
Robert "Bob" Dunlap didn't write that book, that was Roy F. Dunlap, who was another gunsmith from an earlier era.

That being said, Bob Dunlap also had a huge influence on me, very interesting man and a great teacher at that.
He reminded me a lot of my dad, same mentality, same generation, also a parts fixer not a parts replacer as Bob would say.

There is a video called "The Secret life of Bob Dunlap", you can still find it on the Piratebay. AGI took that one out of their catalog a long time ago, doesn't get sold anywhere anymore, so I guess it's ok to promote that here now. It's about 6 hours of conversation with Bob, where he speaks a lot about his life, and a lot more about firearms. It's really a great watch.

I did a double-take when I saw this. Blast from the past.

My exposure to Mr. Dunlap was an AGI video in which he claimed tilting barrels would “break off at the muzzle” within a couple hundred rounds if shot suppressed.

I was working at an NFA distributor at the time doing inside sales of cans and pistons. It came up a couple times a month. We’d get calls from gunsmiths or shop managers asking the round count limits for different barrels shooting suppressed.

One of them finally sent us the video, and we realized thousands of otherwise knowledgeable industry folks had been trained by AGI to believe pistol cans snapped barrels apart.
