Before I go to YouTube, how are you guys starting your roll pins?

I'm trying not to throw my gas block and roll pin in the trash, and was hoping there was an easy way to get these started. I'm talking specifically the roll pin that secures the gas tube to the gas block.

The last time I faced this, I just used an inch long pin and cut it off when I was finished. It's like you need three hands to get this accomplished.

Buy a Harbor Freight 3/8” punch. Drill a hole in it about half the length of the roll pin.

roll pin starter.

Bevel one end ever so slightly with a file, drop of oil where you’re gonna start it.

or get some starter punches

I do what Gunner does.
Observe pin. If it is too open, I clamp it carefully and radially with some needle nose.
file around edges of end slightly.
Grease and tap in.

Just like a nail, but with a small hammer and little taps.
Never had one on an AR take any extra work or tools.
I've had all manner screwed up and/or out of spec pins in my profession so that can certainly happen.

You can put an entire lower and the roll pin in a gas block together with a pair of slipjoint pliers with the jaws taped up.

I made this work last night by being a little more patient and resourceful.

I tapered one end as suggested, but I found a set screw in my bin and stuck the roll pin in it. I wrapped the gas block, secured it in the vise and tappy, tap, tap, as @Trevillian so eloquently put it.

:D

Roll pin punches or better yet, a roll pin pusher.
The Little Crow one works excellent for trigger guard roll pins and I've used it successful on other applications.

What is a roll pin pusher?

I have roll pin starter punches and ball tip roll pin punches...
Yep. The ball tip punches are great for finishing without slipping

Roll pin punches. Make it easier to start them, they don’t slip and the pin doesn’t get messed up as easily.
