I still have 2 SBRs up in MI that I need to get permission to take across state lines.
I'm trying to decide the best way to do it.

How does taking a rolling rifle case on a commercial airline work? Is it oversized/odd sized/etc? Do they charge a lot more than they would for a normal suitcase?
I'm looking at this 54 in Wheeled Hard Long Gun Case from Academy Sports because it looks like it might be a solid pelican knockoff. Also, it's big and not terribly expensive. There's a coupon code, RMN0JLFGO , that knocks $26 off.
I'm thinking I could order online, have it shipped to MI, file my transport papers, then either bring it home on my next visit or maybe just have trustee stick my guns in it and ship them back to me down here (lawyer permitting).

Anybody have experience/advice doing this sort of thing?

Can they not be broken down to fit in something that doesn't scream "box o guns"..?

I would overnight them to myself with insurance.

They probably could, yes. but this way i get a rolling rifle case out of the deal :)
I'd have to review the requirements for mailing myself a gun. or flying with one. either way i'm not looking forward to crossing an imaginary line.

2 SBRā€™s ... break them down and ship the 2 uppers or ā€œmachine partsā€ UPS and buy a case large enough to carry the 2 lowers per checked baggage. Because they are separated I doubt anyone would know the lowers are stamped and even then since it has no upper on it technically you do not have an SBR.

hrm. alternatively maybe I could have a a trustee just bring them to me on a visit. nothing scheduled yet, which makes the ATF thing difficult.
And there's also the fact that every state law would have different transport laws to worry about. And he likes to stop over in DC and VA from time to time...

Agree with @NCFubar break them down, even remove whatever accessories are easy from the lowers to make them less gun-like. Then either checked baggage or stick them in a fedex box and bobā€™s your uncle.

You can request dates up to a year. Which should make the ATF 5320.20 process more flexible.

Just avoid going back to MI. That's worked for me. I'd consider the loss of SBR a fair trade.
