Roof started leaking, so I called a couple of companies for replacement quotes. The previous homeowner told me the roof was replaced after a hurricane in 1994, so it's time for this one. Two companies said $7900 and $8400, and I said I can't do that, so I'll fix the leak myself and try to budget for replacement next year.

I found the leak.

And the culprit.

I think all my vent boots are leaking, so I will fix them all.

That’s the usual suspect. I had 4 company’s quote mine and Lowe’s was the best deal to us. 800 more than the cheapest and 3k lower than the most expensive. We had the money set aside but when Lowe’s offered 18 month free financing we went that way.

The Chief is also a terrible influence. He tells me "You and I can replace that roof, no problem. Shouldn't take more than two days."

Yeah, sure thing Chief.

Well...if Uncle Sam hadn't offered to pay me 12 hours of overtime Saturday!

Gotta pay for that $600 car repair from last weekend!

Sort of.

At least replaced the rotted plywood.

And leveled the porch roof with the rest of the house. All that flashing was covering up the transition.

So we raised the porch roof to match the house.

Picked a bad day for a job like that... Hope you got it closed up before this storm hits.
It's as waterproof as it's going to get. Asphalt paper is down and I used a whole tube of roofing sealant, so we'll see how she does.

left side drop leg holster which is what I use when cutting brush with the Stihl handlebar fs130 and harness on the right side
But I don't have a drop-leg holster. I think that's my problem.

The biggest part of my roof is 8/12, which is too steep for me to feel confident on. The rest is 6/12 and even that was pretty sporty when it was bare wood. This tar paper is like glue.

That pitch is nothing compared to mine. Think flag pole.

Well, made it through the storm last week ok, but there was a thunder shower today and a few cycles of heating and cooling curled up the edges of my felt and i guess we didn't do so well because the master bedroom wall turned into a water slide.

We should have tucked the new paper under the existing shingles at the start. Rain running down the roof ran under the new felt.

We did tuck it under the existing shingles. If we'd have tucked it at the start it wouldn't have made any difference.

Regardless...the final product looks good! Did you get enough rain today to say it doesn't leak?
