Developed during WWII in 1943 with production starting in 1944. Probably the first issued weapon in 7.62x39 M43 cartridge. Later the SKS carbine would be used during the assault on Berlin in Apr-May 1945. The AK47 was not the first firearm chambered for this cartridge. Gun was produced in the Soviet Union, Hungry, Poland and China (Type 56, same as the AK47). Gun weighs 16.3 lbs fires from the open bolt on full auto only, 650-750 rpm. Bolt locking system is by two flappers swinging out. This is a scaled down copy from the DP28 machine gun. Semi auto only guns have been modified off full auto guns. Gun is normally feed from a 100 rd belt in a metal drum. Russian and Hungarian used 50 rd belts and Chinese 25 rd segments as used today. Belts can be linked together with interchangablity. Gun was replaced by the RPK light machine gun (heavier barreled AK47) in service. Gun saw extensive service in use by the North Viet Nam Army/Cong.
