Ok, I have a base gun. What should I do? I have a general plan, but am a 10/22 noob. I haven't gone crazy enough to buy a Glock, but I am entering the 10/22 zone against my better CZ judgement. A takedown in a pack could have some utility for me going forward.

Upgrades, stocks, triggers, optics etc. Any suggestions welcome. Bags or packs? Concealment? Vehicle carry, camping, boating, whatever. Let's make this a catch-all 10/22 takedown thread. I'll post pics as I move along. Might be slow, but hopefully it will be useful. Feel free to add your guns and applications. More the merrier.

Hahahahaha you're supposed to be buying a spotting scope

A solid option. It is ugly, but may be useful. I'm going to go light and basic first. But there appears to be a spot in the backpack for a second barrel. This is great option.

If it were mine I would do a volquartsen extractor so it will digest anything that goes bang. Then maybe the BX drop in trigger and a red dot. After that gets expensive. Look at Kidd, Tactical Solutions (TacSol), amd Volquartsens websites and you will quickly understand.

I built one. Mine has almost no Ruger parts left in it. Did the KIDD trigger job, Bolt,Charging handle, bolt release,Buffer,& latch release. Added a sling mount to the front forend so I could mount a Bipod. Had the stock front barrel shortened and threaded. Bought a spare TACSOL threaded barrel. A Lyman Adaptive Tactical Stock with Monopod. A QD Nikon rimfire scope & a QD Red Dot. among other things. Fun little project.

+1 on the Magpul stock. Kidd trigger and tacsol barrel. That is my plan once I get my hands on a TD.

Ok, got a few plans in the works. Ikarus1 recommended a Volquartson extractor. I see that all the big names sell their own upgraded bolts. Not cheap. Is a complete bolt upgrade at some point a good upgrade or should I just do the extractor? I am not going to get too crazy and add a carbon barrel or anything glitzy, but do want as close to 100% reliability as possible. It won't be a bench rest target gun, but I'd like it to feed everything and be able to hit a small critter at 50 yards consistently.

You'll be fine with the stock bolt. If you do want to replace it, I would look at the JWH custom bolts before the more expensive brands.

My opinion:

1. Kidd drop in trigger
2. Kidd Extractor
3. Polish and debur bolt and inside of receiver

This is all it needs.

I got the bx trigger for like 50 bucks, its pretty good considering the next jump in price for triggers

Guess I'll order an extractor since that is two comments suggesting that. Since this is a takedown, non competitve rifle I am not going to spend Kidd money on the trigger. Maybe next time. But I do want a good trigger. Not an 8lb Ruger POS. More to follow on that plan.

Man, it's so worth the money! You will never regret it even for a second.

But I hear you. There are many good alternatives for less money. But yeah, extractor is a must, imo.

Edit: I see you found one.

For $100 you can get the kidd kit - seriously worth the money. You don't need the $200 drop in.

I think I said Kidd drop in, but meant Kidd drop in trigger kit, it's only around 100$ !

Edit: Geerubb was all over that one, lol

Keep in mind that I am a rookie with limited skills and tools. This build is for a basic takedown and learning experience. If I am going to get carried away it will be for one with a fixed stock and most likely a nice optic. For a plinker not sure how nice a trigger I really need. Around 3lbs should be good if it is crisp with a reasonable amount of takeup. But I could see building a sweet target shooter later. Unless my CZ's get jealous.

I did the KIDD trigger job kit. Partially because its a great kit and partially because it was fun to do. http://www.coolguyguns.com/KIDD-Tri...r-Sear-Disconnect-and-Trigger-blade_p_95.html
I bought the bolt that comes with the extractor & firing pin because I have no self control and also polished up the stock bolt and installed their aftermarket pin and extractor in that too. Those parts are cheap so I figured having a spare would be nice.
On a side note. The inside of the aluminum receiver is pretty rough and does well with a little clean up and polishing as well.

Good hint on the receiver. Thanks.

Went with this one. Sent the original in for $33 rebate offer. So for under $100 I'll roll the dice. Found some good feedback while researching. If it isn't decent I deal with it at a later date.

I have a Hornet reworked trigger group, their cheapest option purchased several years ago, in a 10/22 takedown. I am very satisfied with it in off hand shooting and find it ok for rested shooting. I have a Brimstone Tier-2 reworked trigger group in a 10/22 sporter that is much more suitable for rested and, though touchy, good for off hand shooting. Both are a great improvement over the stock trigger group.

I only suggested the BX trigger because I've seen them as cheap as $50 online, and it's a complete drop in with a factory warranty. I have a metal trigger housing so I just did a volquartsen hammer and sear kit and it gave me a nice crisp 4lb hunting trigger with an excellent break. The extractor can actually be improved a bit but at $10, titanium one is a no brainer. The biggest deal with the bolt is it makes the chamber tighter and pins the firing pin closer to the bolt face.

I consider the 10/22 a hunter/plinker and would never sink more into one than an Anchutz or CZ 452 costs. Rimfire Central (the forum) is full of people who've done just that and shot maybe 30% smaller groups at 50yds. Minute of eye of squirrel or 3" steel is all I will ever care about with a semiauto.

That's kind of what I am aiming for. Somewhere in the dusty back room of my brain there is a number at which point it just isn't worth it for a 10/22. I've got a couple CZ 's that shot decent groups when I care enough to use good ammo. This is a takedown plinker. It doesn't need a 1.5 lb trigger and target grade barrel.

Hey, this thread isn't over 'til I say it's over!

Let's talk sights and optics now. I was thinking Williams Fire sight and peep, but the more I think about it the more I think red dot. I ordered the Magpul barrel mounted rail so it will be ready to go. Normally I'd just over pay for an Aimpoint and be done, but a takedown 22 seems like a good candidate for a wiser, less expensive choice. The Primary Arms and Holosun's are getting good reviews from the masses out there. What say you guys? Or maybe the Burris? Less expensive is good on this one as long as it will hold up the brutal pounding of the 22LR and living in a backpack. :p

Whatever you pick needs to fit in the bag if you still intend to keep using the bag. I have both a Nikon Rimfire scope and a Red Dot. Bot are set up as Quick attach and stored in the 3rd tube of the bag.

Primary Arms Micro Dot. Mine are on AR's and they are awesome.
