Ruger 10/22 Takedown Project

I have heard good things, but they have a 3 year warranty and Vortex has the lifetime deal. $30 price difference. Tough call. May never need the warranty right?
I may not make it 3 more years.

Bottom Rifle in this Pic

Magpul BackPacker stock with barrel optic mount.
Tac Sol Xring threaded open sight barrel with rear sight removed.
Tac Sol comp
Williams Ace in the Hole rear peep and rail
Volquartsen trigger and hammer
Power Custom extra power hammer spring
Volquartsen extractor and Firing pin
RimEdge skeletonized charging handle.
Trimmed, trued, and polished the bolt face
Cross- Pinned the firing pin.

Vortex Viper on an AD22 QD mount makes for a removable, repeatable red dot. Removable means I can use the peep when I want to shoot limited

@CZfool68 your mama ever get on someone for salting their food before they taste it? Well maybe not, cause you are piling on the salt!

The 10/22 is a fine gun, but it's as much a Lego set as an AR and for every assembly, part, pin and spring there are 10 people ready to sell you an upgrade. You need to forget it all.

Get out the house and shoot the thing. Drag it around as you've planned and find it's shortcomings in your application. Then look for solutions to those issues.

The path you're on will net you a gun that other people will like or make fun of, but it most likely won't get you the gun you want.

Report back after your first 1,000 rounds.

Don't worry! I now how to sort through the data. I'll get a decent starting point and then tinker from there. Plus maybe someone else will read this and want to go in a different direction than me. Hhmmm? Cool.

In that case, I have the same gun but with an electronic trigger set to less than an oz and am waiting to SBR and suppress it. Haven't decided what to do about the stock. Currently has a FF3 on it.

Have done the bolt buffer thing, but the factory extractor works great and has for thousands of rounds. I'll deal with it when/if it craps out.

What the heck! No phaser on a rail?

Any thoughts on the Sparc? Might be worth getting a Vortex for the warranty.
I have SPARCs on every rifle I own, other than my 22LR RAR. The warranty is one of the things that sold me on it. Haven't tried the SPARC 2 or SPARC AR (I think that's what it's called). But I like the small dot of the SPARC.

Hey, this thread isn't over 'til I say it's over!

Let's talk sights and optics now. I was thinking Williams Fire sight and peep, but the more I think about it the more I think red dot. I ordered the Magpul barrel mounted rail so it will be ready to go. Normally I'd just over pay for an Aimpoint and be done, but a takedown 22 seems like a good candidate for a wiser, less expensive choice. The Primary Arms and Holosun's are getting good reviews from the masses out there. What say you guys? Or maybe the Burris? Less expensive is good on this one as long as it will hold up the brutal pounding of the 22LR and living in a backpack. :p
Tech Sights mate, best 10/22 irons out there.

Ok, sanded and polished the bolt and receiver today. No real burrs or anything so just gave it a light touch up.

Magpul stock arrive today and the Hornet Trigger is here as well. Waiting on a few little Kidd parts and the red dot. I'll try to get everything together Thursday and post some pics. I've got a decent stash of 22LR so hopefully it will be at the ramge this weekend.

Saw several folks out there in internet land talking about how they wish the 10-22 had storage in the buttstock. Looked up how to remove the buttplate on a synthetic 10-22 stock and started tinkering.

I'd be glad to donate my original Ruger takedown stock if anybody needs it for a project or an experiment. I am still waiting for a few parts so it may be next week before it's available. But if anyone wants it let me know. Free to a good home.

Ok, here's where I am to this point. Think project is done, just need to shoot now!

Ruger Takedown Rifle
Magpul x-22 Backpacker Stock
Hornet Red Baron Trigger
Kidd Buffer
Kidd Extractor
Kidd Bolt Handle, Spring and Rod
Magpul x-22 Optic Mount
Primary Arms Micro Dot

Also have the Copper Basin Backpack to carry it instead of the Ruger pack. Now I just have to figure out how to pack and organize the pack.

Nice!
Give us a review once you shoot it including how you like the Copper Basin Backpack.

The pack seems of good design and decent quality. It is not as heavy duty as some packs I have, but it certainly doesn't scream gun which is nice. Plenty of room inside for the 10/22, mags and some other items. Couple of exterior pockets. Setting it up is going to be the tough part. I am thinking I'd like it to be a sparse get home pack. Maybe room for a basic first aid kit and a few survival type items. Bottle holder on the side for water. Maybe find space for a handgun and a few mags too. I am sure it will be an ongoing project that will be changed up quite a bit.

Wow, that looks good and I especially like the mount for the red dot. It stays with the barrel so you know it should always be in alignment. I have wondered about mounting to the receiver and the barrel going back in exactly the same place every time.

The mount is the new Magpul version. You have to remove the Ruger block so this one will fit, but that is easy. I really enjoy the Aimpoint on my AR carbine so I thought this could be the mini version of that. Lightweight and easy to get on target quickly. Certainly no bench rest gun, but it should be useful. My only complaint with the mount is that my understanding was due to the cut out in the middle of the rail you could still use the sights. Which is kind of true, IF you remove the red dot. But I guess if the dot fails at least I don't have to remove the rail to use the sights. If you had a dot with a good QD it would be a perfect set up. Not sure it will work great with this dot.

That is exactly why I went with the Viper on the AD22 QD mount. I've removed and replaced it now a dozen times or more and it returns right to zero as advertised.

I built this one as a multipurpose woods bumming, competition, zombie apocalypse gun.

All in it weighs just over 3 and a half pounds.

Sounds like it has alot of room. My bag is full to capacity and does scream gun bag. It has 4, 50round mags a double 10 round mag pouch with mags, a bi-pod, some spare parts, 2 fore ends, a QD scope and a reflex, the receiver end and a few 50 round boxes of ammo. I need more room badly.

Very nice build!

Thanks. It took a bit of tweaking to run reliably with the new barrel. Tighter chamber...... After the bolt mods and the extra power hammer spring it all got ironed out....

Maybe. Or you may have too much stuff. I'm a stuff guy too, and try to fight that impulse. For my set up a bi-pod and a bunch of extra things defeat the purpose. I want light and basic. 3 mags fit in the stock and I should be able to fit a barrel snake in the grip. So the bag can be for mags, ammo and other non-gun supplies.

The more I learn the more I am tempted to get crazy, since that is how I normally roll. But I intend to keep this reliable, light and basic. We'll see.
