I was sorting a bunch of 45 brass this evening and came across this one. Anyone familiar with a Ruger headstamp? Is it rare, or just another piece of brass.

About 5 years ago Ruger rolled out some 45acp and 9mm SD ammo, I think they quit it and just partner with Hornady today. Don’t recall how it was marked.

It was the Ruger ARX ammo. They did a few popular calibers but it never really caught on.

I don't look at EVERY piece of 45 brass, but I do most of them since I have to sort out large and small primer brass. I don't ever recall seeing a Ruger headstamp on anything.

People sort pistol brass by headstamp? Why would you do that?

The only time I do that is when I am working up new loads, I want to know the potential consistency of the load and want to remove as many variables as possible. Production runs are almost always with mixed brass.

I always mark the brass I load with a sharpie. When I come back from the range, the mark tells me that I have already processed that brass and it goes back into circulation. In 45acp, brass that I picked up that is not marked will get checked for primer size, and the few crimped primer brass like Win NT and Federal NT. This is the only time I will look at headstamps.

Accuracy.

Doesnt really address sorting by headstamp but it does address accuracy in handloading new brass vs already fired mixed brass. Guarantee mixed brass is going to be different lengths and according to the AMU that makes all the difference.

I'm sure fired cases of the same head stamp are even different lengths especially if they were shot in different guns.

"the results, after all this work, will be underwhelming to some. The new Starline brass shaved only an average of 0.3 inch off of the groups at 25 yards. That, however, can be a big deal to a competition shooter. At 50 yards, that is half an inch, and that can mean points kept, that would have otherwise been lost, if the groups had been larger."

So that means you shoot lower and lefter? meh. If I'm worried about accuracy more than minute of man, I'll use a rifle. I have trimmed pistol brass ONCE in my life.

It would seem laying off Caffeine the day of a comp would matter more than pistol brass length

Thing is Sweeney's one group was just over an inch and with junk brass it was just over 1.3"...that's 30% bigger group. Yes, life is too short to trim pistol brass.

I'd love to see anyone shoot a 1.3" group offhand at 25yds without a Ransom rest

I gotta Les Baer PII guaranteed 1.5" grps at 50yds gun that will. Top Bullseye, now Precision Pistol shooters shoot 1" grps at 25yds all the time, with 1 hand.

Yeah, but those aren't "most guns", or most shooters, either. ;)
