Ruger LCP II

I have one. Having owned multiple wee .380’s, this one seems very reliable.

That said, the sights suck, and it is a "get off me gun", nothing more. Just seems much more reliable.

Knowing what I know now, I’d look at a G42

I just picked one up for “shorts weather” and my wife has been carrying hers since they first came out. No problems with hers at all. Hers eats anything you feed it. I did hi-viz paint the front sights on them and it made a huge difference.

Did the same thing. This stuff is the bomb for that.

Haha, I'm also a sucker for mouse guns. My favorites are the P238, G42, and LCPII. (This is no small part to them all being locked breech designs.) If you're pocket carrying, the LCPII is fantastic as it's small and light and has a very glock-like trigger.

The P238 is also small but it's not light. This makes it a nice shooter; probably the nicest pocket 380 I've ever shot.

The G42 is verging on large for pocket-carry but small for a holster. It's in a weird in-between zone size-wise. But like all things Glock, it's a good reliable gun with a good trigger.

I pocket carry a G43, which is why I opted for the LCPII for deep concealment, instead of the G42, because of the reasons you cited.

I have one that I pocket carry, and it's been very reliable. Sights suck, but it's a very close range gun. I also have a Glock 42, and it's a much better gun, but I can pocket carry the Ruger easier.

Had the Keltec for years without a problem then went to the LCP II. That too I have not had a problem with except the pocket dust that gets inside the barrel from not being shot a lot. When I do, it has never failed me. I also like the last shot locks the slide back.

Comparing it to a G42 or P238 is apples and oranges. If you want a deep concealment, lightweight, cargo shorts pocket gun the Ruger is very hard to beat. My LCP II is my warm weather go to.

I have two LCP II's. They are a lot of pistol for the money.

While the LCP II is obviously not a target pistol, it might be good to quantify what "get off me gun" means. I am not a great shooter, but as long as I get to the range every three weeks or so, I can place 3-inch groups at 5 yards and hit torso-sized targets without fail at 25 yards. So do not think of it as only a sub-3-yard gun.

I should add that that accuracy is after adding Hogue grips. The grip was too small for me without them.

As others have mentioned, paint the sights. I use neon orange nail polish on the front sites and white nail polish on the rear sight, each with a clear top coat. Some use model car paint, but I like the ease of stripping and re-applying nail polish. Oh, I should mention that on the front sights, I start with white, then put on two layers of orange, followed by the clear coat.

If by chance this is your first .380, be aware that SD ammo selection is even more critical. I am impressed the amazing performance of Lehigh Defense 380 Auto 90gr Xtreme Penetrator Ammunition
in gel tests by ShootingTheBull410. Watch the whole video, it is entertaining. Not everyone respects gel tests, but my view is that 1) it is better than no data at all, and 2) the FBI likes it.

If you take the (very large) set of all handguns, and then throw out everything that's not a 380, you are left with a much smaller set of guns. If you then take that much smaller set of guns and throw out everything that's not single stack, and then further shrink it down by throwing out everything that doesn't fit in a pocket, you are left with a tiny subset of handguns.

If you then take that tiny subset of handguns and throw out everything that's not a locked breech design, you are left with a handful of guns that are very, very similar. Hence, apples-to-apples.

JMHO.

As far as how well any of these put rounds on target, comparisons should to be made while shooting on the clock if you have the opportunity.

When time is of the essence, you’ll be shocked at much your marksmanship deteriorates when you are in a rush.

Well that is a unique perspective haha. If I could only own one 380 I would go with the G42 or P238. Since we have near unlimited options I have several :)

True! As I recall, the NYPD hits their target 18% of the time. ( For Winston-Salem PD, it was 82%, as of a few years ago.)

Just weighed all three with holster and ammo, and the differences are ounces:

LCP II - 15 oz.
G42 - 18 oz.
P238 - 18.5 oz.

Interesting. I just toss the LCP in pocket no holster. What's the weight without holster? I'm shocked they are that close, the LCP feels MUCH lighter to me.

All three holsters weigh almost exactly the same, so the difference with ammo is from 3 to 3.5 oz. Don't know what to tell you man. Maybe hit the gym some time?

Now these three handguns are a good example of an apples-to-oranges comparison. :D

In an earlier post you mentioned some mouse guns you owned--one was the LCP II, but you didn't mention an original LCP. Maybe you have one, left it off the list, and sometimes carry it in a pocket without a holster. Since the LCP is basically a double action gun, many people (not me, but that doesn't matter) would consider it safe to carry without a holster. But it seems like maybe you were saying you carry the LCP II without a holster. The LCP II is a single action gun, and it's definitely not safe to carry without a holster. Not meaning to get in your business here, but, well, it seemed worth mentioning.

The LCP and LCP II are the same basic gun. It takes a looooong, deliberate pull to go bang. The biggest difference is the trigger was improved on the LCP II. I've been shooting a long time and trained right. My muscle memory doesn't allow me to touch the trigger until ready to shoot.

Thanks a bunch for the 411

Since the LCP is basically a double action gun, many people (not me, but that doesn't matter) would consider it safe to carry without a holster.

Safe or not, I find the draw really slow out of a pocket without a holster. With nothing to keep it oriented "up" the little guns rotate around for me so I end up with less of a draw and more of a "fish around my pocket and eventually get it out". Pocket draw is slow in the best conditions, without a consistently oriented pistol it's glacial.

(full disclosure, I don't have an LCPII.... have an original LCP that's broken an extractor and been sent back to Ruger for failures after replacing that extractor... apparently you're not supposed to shoot them as much as I was. who knew? From just playing around with one the LCPII seems superior to the original in every way except size, being about 10% larger)

Shoots great! Love the trigger compared to LCP. Who needs sights if you're deploying that thing!

My only issue is that the mag release button tends to engage during a mag dump. Must be my grip.

.....the sights suck....

These are excellent options for the little mouse gun. Also allows better shot placement in a less-than-optimal sighting scenario such as some dude just yanked your car door open in the Burger King parking lot.... [emoji38]

Raided the wife’s nail polish collection and this shiny glassy blue polish works best with my crappy eyesight especially in low light.
Now, it will be a win if the wife will put on nail polish more than once a year :)

I’ve had 2. I really wanted to like the LCPII. With a 7 round mag it felt really good in my hand and disappeared in my iwb holster. The first one dropped mags every shot, and it did it regardless of whether it was in my left or right hand or someone else’s hand. Sent it back to Ruger and got a full replacement. I took it out to the range to test it out and ended up with less than 1/2 a box through it before the trigger bar spring jumped out and scratched the slide up.

Went back to Ruger again and they sent me a refund. I know my incidents are probably very isolated, but there’s nothing you can tell me to get me to trust that thing as a carry gun. Shouldn’t have tried to replace my p238, which I can actually shoot accurately. In Ruger’s defense, their customer service was incredible.

First post — hey yall.

Yikes, if I'd gone through that I wouldn't trust one either. I'll second the comment about Ruger's customer service; I had to send an SR22 back once and they fixed the gun and paid for shipping both ways.

Welcome to CFF.

No kidding. In Ruger’s defense they fell all over themselves to make the situation right. They were on top of communication and kept me updated every step of the way and even sent me a silicone rag, a hat, and some mags as an apology. I was very impressed. As much as I was mad at the situation, their response to it kept my business. I bought an SR22 for my girlfriend to learn on not long after that.
