I carry my J frame guns in a paddle holster. I am getting a 642 with laser for a lady in my office to keep in her pocketbook. I was wondering what kind of holster would you recommend? Just a pocket holster?

Does she have a purchase or CCW permit?

Purse carry is not great, for a lot of reasons, but...a lady's got to do what a lady's got to do sometimes, right? Okay, well, if she's dead set on carrying that way the holster needs to stay on the gun. You don't want it rattling around in the purse, getting a pen, brush handle, or something else in the trigger guard. That's a good way to have a negligent discharge. It's probably best that the gun and its holster have their own pocket. Also, the holster will probably draw out with the gun, so she needs to prepare for that event too. Most pocket holsters are too loose.

Just curious, why are you buying a gun for this lady's use? Does she need to carry in the purse? Is a J frame the right gun for her? You asked a question, but your post raised a few as well.

Oh, to answer your original question...probably one of those hard Kydex IWB holsters that firmly grip the gun, where it snaps in hard, is your best bet.

Prosecutor, I brought her a couple of mine small 380s and 9 mm with my 642. One of the 380s and 9 had a Crimson Laser on it and wanted the 642 with the laser. I was thinking a Glock 19 or a Walther PPS but she had a hard time with the slide. Also, she liked the weight of the 642.

I might load her some light 38 rounds until she gets used to shooting it. I foresee her and her husband with a Glock 19 in the near future.

Vedder Holsters pocket locker has an optional thumb tab. Get one of those if possible.
But off-body carry will get you hurt, or worse.

Good deal. If she likes the revolver, she might also like to try a Model 36 or 60 or something in carbon or stainless steel. The extra weight goes a long way in dampening recoil for the inexperience / infrequent shooters. The additional weight makes little, if any, difference if she is going to carry n the purse.

I carry mine in an Uncle Mike’s or Blackhawk Size 4 pocket holster. When I walk around my hand is already on the gun, ready to draw.

It’s significantly faster to draw when your hand is already ON the gun.
