No, I haven't googled this, but I've not heard of this gun before. I'm not going to let it stop me from asking about its value.

This pistol was owned by the same person as the Colt detective special I posted about earlier.

What I know about this pistol is that it was sent back to S&W (supposedly) to get a new barrel and plating. I think it looks pretty good. As a result, the barrel has a different serial than the frame, although the original barrel is in the box. It also has numbers and what not stamped all over it.

    Estimates?

That looks like a 5 1/2 inch 1917 that somebody had nickeled . If original the trigger and hammer would be case hardened. In the last picture the hammer looks correct. Tell me if they are both case or nickel?

If it went back to S&W there will be markings under the grips, on the frame telling month and year and what was done.

We had a pen company here in our fair town that had tanks for nickel plating. This revolver favors one of those back door plating jobs. Without a factory letter I would not value the revolver over $300. Be sure to check the barrel to cylinder gap as well the tightness of the barrel, the pin may be hiding a problem.

You forgot that you told us you're only shooing one caliber this year so this pistol does not qualify! ;)

If it’s in 45LC can you slug both barrels?

Just wonder if someone swapped an older .454 for a .452 when that change happened in commercial ammo.

If it’s 45acp then it does look like a nickeled 1917, how long is the cylinder?

Call S&W in the morning. Give ‘em the serial number and they’ll tell you what they know about it.

The cylinder has the same number as the grip frame...that's good....I guess.

Perhaps the US Property Markings and number were removed and the grip butt re-stamped. The US Property number is not the serial number anyway.

The number on the barrel (attached to the gun) is also found on the butt and on the cylinder. Open the cylinder, and a different number is present and that number matches the number on the barrel in the box.

    But, wait! There's more.

The number inside the frame that's also on the barrel in the box, can also be found under the ejector on the cylinder. And...AND, the 127018 number is also stamped on the barrel in the box. Dang.

I’m of the opinion that it’s a 45acp commercial second model hand ejector, the same as the m1917 just not so marked. Not sure how many were made, but I think not many. Produced post war.

Lanyard ring would not be present on commercial. As I said earlier, take the grips off, if it went to S&W the frame will be marked with month and year and what was done. I think it is a Military Model with the Property marks rubbed off. I have had many. Some were rechambered to 45 Colt. I'd be interested in it if Any of these was true.

At the bottom, near the lanyard ring is "L2"

There is nothing on the opposite side.

The R-N in the box is your proof S&W renickeled it. That gun has been back to Smith more than once. The star on the cylinder indicates an earlier return and likely cylinder replacement. Smith didn’t start using the boxed refinish marking until the 1970s, I think. The star marking was long out of use by then.

Lanyards could be ordered on commercial guns.

There are several military proofs evident in your pics. However, Smith used leftover WWI military parts on commercial guns well into the 1920s. Still, I’m with Billy on it being a refinished Model 1917. Also, one of your shots shows the inside of the chambers. Looks like .45 ACP, to me.

If there is anything else I can take a picture of (or better picture of), or measure, or do to get a round about idea of what the value may be, please let me know.

These (this and the colt in the other thread) belong to a widow lady in my stepmom's family and I would like to know when I put them up for sale, that she's getting a fair price for them.

    Thanks!

That thing is a S&W cylinder locking bolt. Might have gotten replaced when it went back to S&W and they put the old one back in the box.

As far as value goes, even though the factory did the nickel job, you are likely to get $500ish, give or take for it, assuming it is in good shape mechanically. If it were mine, I'd put $750 on it, highlight the factory rework, and wait to see if I got the right guy who fell in love with it. However, I'm doing shows every weekend and it would get much more exposure that way than the average private seller could give it. A lot of 1917s became law dog guns, and many of those got nickeled by their new LE owners. This one would likely scratch an itch for someone who finds romance in pre-1970s Texas/Southwest LE folklore.

If you could get her $450 or more, you'll be doing her right. Just my 2 cents, which didn't cost you 2 cents. ;)
