My dirst safe was delivered yesterday. Went with a Liberty Fatboy. Have it installed in my basement. It's dry down there, never had any leaks of moisture issues. I added a 18" Goldenrod last night, as well as a canister of desicant and one of those Evadry self drying desicant units as well. Read that 45-55% is optimal. Left safe closed over night, checked a bit ago and safe was at 47%.

Respectfully, That is a bit too much detail about the safe location. I’d edit that stuff out just to be safe.

I have had my safe in an air conditioned area. I don’t use a dehumidifier in the safe.

Routine maintenance will prevent rust.

Issues arise if a firearm is stored in a damp place, trunk of a car or attic in the south.

Nobody here knows me or where I live. I cut some out though regardless. Thanks

Isn’t the Eva-dry just silica gel in a different package?

I think you’re fine at 47%. The real problems occur when you have guns in a cold environment and then warm it up and condensation forms on the guns like happens in a garage, car trunk, shed, etc. Humidity contributes to slow rusting, condensation causes it quickly.

I struggle to keep mine at 50% in my garage. I have a dehumidifier in the garage and tons of desiccant packs in the safe. Might get a golden rod for extra piece of mind and a few less points of humidity.

As I was rudely reminded last night, don't forget to check everything semi regularly.
My Golden Rod failed at some point recently (its a few years old) and my dessicant packs were soaked.
I had mildew on everything not in a gun sock. I spent a couple hours killing it along with cleaning and treating the wood on 11 long guns.
I baked my dessicant dry, ordered a new rod and some more gun socks.

Damn. Sounds like you should probably dispose of any steel framed CZ's you have as well. Just PM me your address and I'll come pick them up for you. My safe is in an air conditioned room so they'll be better off here.

I check my goldenrod with a laser infrared thermometer once a month.
I have one of these in my safe, $8 at walmart.

Cheap digital hygrometers are handy. Make sure you get one that can be calibrated. Salt test works fine.

If you really want to get anal about it, follow the link and get some Boveda Humidity packs. Used by a wide range of professions to regulate humidity when it matters. I've used them to store fine cigars for several years at a time.

Recommend a hygrometer and calibration kit?
I have an old analog one, would like to upgrade but haven’t because I don’t know that i’d Trust the new any more than the old.

My safe is in an air conditioned area with a goldenrod and a dessicant canister. Digital hygro/thermostat tells me it stays 3-4 deg above the room and hovers around 40% humidity. I bought a cheap one on amazon and so far see no need to upgrade. I’ll spend that money on lighting.

For calibration the Boveda kit, or the salt test.

Hygrometer? I've used Xikar almost exclusively in my humis. There are others, theirs just have their name on them and can be calibrated as well as fit into a humidor. Read the reviews, last time I checked they changed the ones the Xikars they were selling on Amazon to no calibration, just trust them. UhUh. If your analog is accurate, you have a nice piece of equipment. In the end, it doesn't have to be expensive. My little ones were about $25, and that was and still is a bunch.
