I'm going to be helping one of my sons "get shed of" a car in Wilmington in a month or two once I help him get into another one I've got. The vehicle is titled to him with clear title, runs and drives, good tires, and brakes should be good (I put front pads on a year ago before he moved there), but I don't think its worth enough to try and sell/sail/cell/sale on Craigslist with the folks that usually come looking for vehicles of that value and condition, and with me up here. It's a beater.

The last time we went through this was in Wake County. The car was totaled and Wagner's Auto Salvage in Durham came out and hauled it off from the body shop. I had my son's title and I don't think he even had to be there. It was just me and the driver from Wagners. That was three years ago and Wagner's says they won't do it like that anymore, that things have changed or something. With my son in Wilmington it's a little more complicated now.

So, I'm looking for a place in Wilmington. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Cape Fear pick and pull buys vehicles. Running or not. I don't know what they pay....BUT.....I WOULD at least try Craigslist. Some people might need a $400-500 car.... Probably more than you'll get from scrap yard people..But again I don't know.

I lived down there for years. Take it to Leland walmart. Park it put a sign in the windows. Itll be sold in just a few days. I don't remember any salvage yards like that down there. Always look on Craigslist for the people looking to haul off cars.

I'll check with Cape Fear, thanks.
I got $650 for the totaled Buick Century three years ago. Since I'm going to transact this deal I am just not going to screw with CL for a $1000-$2000 car, plus I'm two hours away. The last time I sold a $1500 car the guy's girlfriend had to buy it for him because he had no driver's license. Not getting tangled up in that anymore.

What kind of car is it? Hell I may be interested in just a go to the store vehicle.
2007 Pontiac Torrent. White, 140xxx miles. Uses oil, but I don't know where it goes. It didn't smoke last time I saw it running when he moved a year ago, and I've always had to add oil. Didn't leak either, then. Scuffed up on the right rear quarter panel. Most of it will buff out, seriously. Not sure what he rubbed up against. Good tires when I looked at them last weekend. I changed ALL the fluids at 100k. Sold it to my son at 105K.

Only reason I'm selling is he's on my dime going to school and I just don't plan to put money into the car when things start to crap out. I've got another one I can put him in, so this one will have to go. It won't be available until I can get a recall taken care of in 30-60 days on the one I'm going to put him in. This is what they look like. Stolen photo. Charcoal cloth interior. See the rear window on the right? It is broken out and he got white plastic tape and taped it up the opening. Did a decent job. It's pretty dirty. Oh, and driver's side door handle just broke off. I replaced the inside door handle last year. He traveled with a welding/pipefitting crew for a year or so.

Is it safe to assume you're not interested in donating it for a tax write-off?

I'm only 45 minutes from Wilmington, and I have friends/family down there. I'll handle the craigslist part for ya if you want me to weed out the time-wasters. That's pretty much what I do all day. In fact, I can write you one hell of a great Craigslist ad!

Cape Fear will probably offer you $250'ish running or not; their prices depend on weight of car, scrap metal prices, and demand for that specific vehicle.
I've done that on my own before, but it's his and he doesn't make enough in college to file a return, much less need the write off.

Thanks for the help, but I am going to unload it there, or to someone I know here, or up here if I have to.

Like I said, I got $650 for a totaled Buick Century three years ago up here.

I haven't established a price yet, because I'm at least a month away from being able to do anything. Just trying to get my ducks in a row since Wagners up here won't work out like I'd planned.

This. Sail, cell, sell, sale it out of a parking lot first for the first $500 that comes along.

Scrap price is way down. Around here, it is $100 - $150 if you bring it to them. $ 50 less if they come get it.

Ugh. Thanks for the heads up. I've got one interested party here, and if that doesn't pan out I may just post it for sale here so I'm dealing with a known quantity. There's a DMV tag office close to where the car is, too.

Dayum. I got $500 doing nothing

I can't do anything till I get the shortblock recall squared away on the wife's Hyundai. That's at least a month out.
Trade the hon-day in tomorrow at the Ford dealership for an Escape. I believe they have 72 months 0% interest.
Done.

Then you can sell your son's car to @Mikeoverlay or whomever you wish.

Win win

Lol

The appealing thing to me about the salvage folks three years ago was that even though it was titled to one of my students, I handled the whole thing myself with the salvage driver, bada bing, bada boom. Didn't even need to have my son, the title holder there. Not sure how I worked that out. And they were actually giving decent money then.

We're gonna buy the MIL's 2014 escape with 3,000 miles for the missus. She likes it.

Geez, I was wondering if there's someone here with memory actually worse than mine. lol ;)

fieldgrade, have your son fill out the DMV power of attorney and then you can do what ever you need to do with the title. When my son bought his truck, he had to go back to school in VA and would not be around to do the paperwork when the DMV was open. He sent me the notarized form and I took care of everything for him at the DMV, no questions asked.

This is outstanding. Thanks.

Interesting. It has a blank for "Motor number" and a blank for "Serial number" but not for the VIN.
Hmmm
....Don't you know that's your son's motor was the 69th one made on that Wednesday...You know "hump day"....

For serial,....I'd put Frosted Flakes, Trix, and Fruit Loops......Lololololol ( yes I know the difference between serial and cereal)

Bwahahaha
