I have a few AR lowers and thinking that I want to build a SBR. I have 3 ARs in 556, 300 BO 16", a pistol 300 BO with a 10.5" barrel and 16" AR9.
If you were looking to build a SBR, what caliber would you be looking at?

Actually building one now in 6.5 Grendel. I have one in 5.56 and .300 Blk Out. Love the .300 Blk Out but hate the cost of ammo (commercial or reloading). Can't say how well it's going to perform but I figured why not find out lol.

AJ, not really sure about the 6.5 Grendel in a shot barrel. For some reason I think of the 6.5 Grendel as a long range bullet and using a 18 to 20 inch barrels. Let us know how it shoots.

Will do. I'm not looking for long range. Have those in bolt guns. I was looking for something fun to plink with, cheaper than a .300 Blk Out to shoot, and could be used for deer at close range. What will be your primary usage?

Just to play around with. When I built my 300 BO AR -16" I thought that I was going to shoot it a lot but you are right about the cost to reload it vs a 223. I have shot my pistol 300 a bunch but it is still new.
I have 4 lowers sitting around and no NFA items in my trust. I figure the cheapest way to start is building a SBR.

Seems like you answered your own question right there... Do a .223 since you'll shoot it most. Of course you can always swap your upper to whatever you want, beauty of the AR platform.

I subscribe to the school of thought of "keep your original upper around so that you can put it back to the registered configuration, making swapping the upper a temp change, not a permanent one". However this may not be necessary, idk.

Jezzsubbie, from what I understand, once you register the lower you legally can not change it back to a carbine. And if you do put the 16" upper back on it, you still need your paperwork if a LEO agency runs the serial number of your lower.
I wish a lower that I have was a Glock lower. That is what I would build first.

Again, I’m no NFA expert but I do know that is false. You can take an NFA lower and throw a 16” upper on it no problem legally. As for LEO running the serial, they can’t see anything at all other than whether it’s been reported stolen and 90% of cops won’t know the first thing about your Form 1 even if you show them.

Very true. The ATF used to have an FAQ on the NFA site and this was one of the questions answered.

Now you can legally shoulder a pistol, I wouldn’t add the additional $200, state restrictions, paperwork, wait time to build an SBR again.
Save up and get two cans, 22lr & 30 cal.

In addition to what he said already...

It’s not an SBR unless configured as one. This means you could sell the lower, or a complete AR w/ 16” barrel, any time you wanted to with no NFA paperwork. You can also cross state lines without permission in either of those configurations.

At that point, the firearm is no different than you taking one of your current ARs and engraving your name on it.

6.5 Grendel has some very impressive performance out of short barrels. Read some testing on it and it raised my eyebrows.
