A South Carolina family who adopted a pet deer is asking local hunters not to kill it, according to a Facebook post.

The family said they allow “George” to roam freely around their Chester County property and beyond. But as the region gets deeper into hunting season, they felt compelled to alert local hunters, The State reported.

“Local Hunters … Please don’t shoot the (7-point deer) with the yellow tape around his antlers,” the post read. “If you see him, its George!” read a post from Kena Lucas Funderburk. “Also, if you happen to see George, shoot us a message and let us know where! Very interested to see how far he travels this season”

The post ended with “#dontshootGeorge”.

The family said they adopted the deer after its mother was hit by a car, The State reported. They said the animal formed bonds with their children and their pet dog as it grew older. When it was fully grown, the family allowed the deer to roam freely, even well beyond their property. They said the deer would leave for three to six-month stretches but always returned to their house.

Kena said local hunters have responded positively to the family’s message, with most saying, “You’ll get a pass from us.”

She said a hunter spotted the deer on Monday 15 miles from their home, because of the yellow tape on its antlers.

a friend from Pennsylvania had a pet one in his youth, they put a bandana around its neck..... only to see it gutted, hanging in the neighbors tree the next year....

This is no lie, in WI the farmers actually paint a bright orange X on the side of their COWS to keep hunters from shooting them.

If that's what's needed. There should be A LOT more jokes about WI than WV.

There are plenty of jokes about both to go around.
Why does God put more ugly, fat girls in WI than any other state?? Because WV was full.....
Why did God make the winters harder in WI than WV?? Because they have plenty of fat girls to get you through....

I remember the first cow I saw with the orange X, later that evening in the "Tavern" (Bar to those of us in the south) I asked the bartender about it and he broke out in a hearty belly laugh and said it was to keep the hunters from shooting them. From that point on I was called "Jack the Southern Boy".... It was all in fun so I didn't get upset about it.... But at least he always remembered what I was drinking...

We have a crazy old woman who lives next to the property I hunt. One day, she stopped me and my dad as we were leaving. She told us that she and her husband have been feeding a deer and to not shoot that one because it was tame. My dad looked at her like o_O and said, "How are we supposed to know which deer you are talking about?" You could see the light bulb turn on in her head. She clenched her jaw, turned around, and walked away.

I wont shoot one with an orange vest on, but I hope they know that those antlers fall off each year.......and George might end up on a grille somewhere.

Should have asked what she was using to feed it and bought that for bait.

A friend joked about standing in the field with corn in one hand and a pistol in the other.

I've shot two deer, a couple years ago off a cotton field that I was given last minute access to, and both were close enough for me to have killed with a knife. At least that's what a friend of mine suggested when I told him how close they were to me.

I was standing off the edge of the field, just inside the tree line, behind a bush (probably more inside a bush). I didn't have time to scout or set up a tree stand, so I just stood there. The lighting was perfect for the leaves to gather all the light, which hid me well behind them. Both deer were taken at about 5 yards away with a .308. Looking back at it now, I wish I had used a pistol, as the rifle round didn't open up enough to put them down efficiently and I had to track one into a thicket off of the Mingo swamp.
