Looking to pick up some bulk ammo for my AR soon. What brands/bullet weights should I look for and what should I avoid? My rifle is a Stag lower/ PSA 14.5 CHF 1/7 twist barrel upper. Also, what defensive ammo should I consider? Thanks in advance for any help.

Pass the popcorn please. You know the saying about having an opinion and an anus hole, right? You're going to get both here.

Here is one, serious, suggestion I do have. If you're not familiar with his blog, Herschel Smith has written on this subject quite frequently. Go to Google, enter the terms "bullet twist rate site:https://www.captainsjournal.com" and you will get a ton of hits.

Your 1/7 barrel should stabilize any bullet weight in the 55-80gr range. You'll have to try different brands/weights to see what your rifle shoots best.

As for defensive ammo...

-As long as it is 5.56NATO from a country that doesn't poop in the street, it's hard to go wrong for bulk ammo.
-M193 typically performs better than M855/SS109 due to higher velocity. Plus some ranges are anti-M855. That said, M855 is still good blasting ammo.
-Bonded JSPs are probably the "best" followed by JSPs and heavy OTMs. Avoid lightweight JHPs, varmints, and ballistics tips for social work.
-Matching range/defense weights generally makes keeping a consistent zero between the two loads.

A case of M193/M855 and Gold Dots would be a great combo.

Yeah, nothing stirs up a food fight like asking "what's the best ammo for INSERT SOMETHING HERE".

Some ARs just don't like steel cased ammo so if you want to run it cheap shoot a few first to see if yours is one of those.

Are you blasting away at full sized IPSC Steel at moderate distances or looking for tiny groups on paper at 100yds?

As always, purpose dictates purchase.

Yes, I guess that's helpful info.
I'm not looking for tiny groups at 100 yards. This will be considered a "home defense" weapon.

Wolf Gold is good. I like anything from Lake City. Honestly, most of the 556 ammo out there is pretty good. Your rifle will shoot just about any bullet weight. If you are looking at less than 100 yards, like you said, I don't think the bullet weight makes much difference in your gun. I would not shoot steel case ammo for home defense. I have shot thousands and thousands of 5.56 of all types and I can say the most common malfunction comes from when I used steel case ammo. It's still rare but happens more than others with a brass case. if it is purely for home defense and you are worried about over-penetration they make a round called Frangible. It basically disintegrates when it hits something. It can also be used to shoot steel closer than you would want with normal ammo because of splatter coming back at you. I think PSA parts kits are not as good. I have seen their bolt carriers have issues on the range. Maybe Quality check the rifle with a gunsmith. There is a youtube channel for the School of the American Rifle. It is worth watching the videos, it's like an armorers course. I really like their content. Get 500 rounds of something you can afford in bulk and go shoot 3-5 hundred rounds in one sitting. Really test the gun, get it hot and dirty, and see what happens. Make sure what you have is dependable.

If you buy a lot of ammo targetsportsusa dot com Prime membership is good. I have been buying from them for years. They have a good selection normally. Unfortunately, you are starting to buy ammo when it is still overpriced imho. To get good with your gun you need to shoot it. So break out the credit card.

Perfect. Thanks for the info.
The LPK is CMMG, the BGC is Toolcraft nickel boron. So a step or so above PSA parts.

Wolf gold is rough in suppressors if you have any. Lots of flame cutting and erosion.

As far as home defense; any little ones or close up neighbors?

Hate to break it to you but Toolcraft makes a lot of PSAs BCGs

Empty nesters now. We have neighbors but not all that close.

If you’re trying to stock up on one type of HD ammo that’s something to consider. I use Hornady TAP which is like a 60gr VMax bullet because I want very little drywall/2x4 penetration with a young one upstairs but it offers explosive soft tissue performance. My bricks should stop the rest despite not having neighbors for the most part.

In your case, a soft point like a Speer Gold Dot, either 55gr or 77gr if you want speed or weight.

Hornady makes a 55gr and 73gr Critical Defense round that may be worth a look
