I will be in Atlanta in spring for business. Since Anniston is only an hour past Atlanta, I was hoping to make a side trip to the CMP South store and range. If I can't do both the store and actually shoot on the range, I'm not sure if it is worth the extra seat time for me.

What should I expect as far as shooting on the range? What is my time commitment since I have never been there or been through any of their procedures? Do they have 600 yard capable rifles on site that I could use or do I need to bring my own equipment?

Unless there's a match, event or other class scheduled, you should have plenty of availability on the ranges. Check the calendar before you show up just to make sure. You'll have to sit through a short training video and get a range safety card from the check-in folks first. Pay your day-use fee and you're good to go.

There's a 50yd pistol, 100yd multipurpose and 600yd (200/300/600) rifle range available. The pistol and rifle ranges are all electronic, so shots are marked and scored automatically. The range staff may ask you to "qualify" on the 100yd range before moving to the big range to assure that you have zeros. There's also a shotgun range, but I've never seen it. There are also action bays in the back, but I'm not sure if they're open for day use.

There really isn't too much to see at the CMP south store so I'd rather spend my time at the range. They do have an awesome airgun range at the CMP south store though. Talladega also sells M1 rifles at their pro shop too.

ADDENDUM - I was down there at the beginning of December and I-20 west of Atlanta traffic was horrible. A long stretch of one-lane interstate due to construction, so plan accordingly.

Bring your own rifle.

You will have to demonstrate competence at shorter ranges before they’ll bring up your next further range target.

The range is near the racetrack. Don’t bother going to the actual CMP store - waste of time. The pro shop at the range is Creedmoor Sports. It’s full of cool stuff to look at, but they are really proud of it.
