I want one, used and cheap, that works well. What do I need to look for, and stay away from?

Thanks!

Stay away from anything made by century, especially older cetme builds. New c308 "work" but what you probably want is something along the lines of a PTR built gun. Much better build quality compared to century.

Love mine. Very fun.

Mags are cheap. Most upgrades are usually $$$ depending on what you are after.

Theyre very dirty guns, just the nature of the beast. Also beat up brass pretty good. I reload but save my last reloadable brass for my 91 clone.

I also have a PTR built 93 clone (they bought the last of the parts that century had and built, then sold them thru buds guns exclusively) also hard on brass, but reloadable still...

Vector arms I have heard are good, never shot one so cant speak to them beyond that.

Have two of the PTR rifles one in 7.62x51 and one in 7.62 x 39, both very reliable rifles , the 7.62 x39 is the more accurate of the two.

Fyi, the latest C308s are built by PTR. Everything from the polymer trigger pack to the barrel and reciever is all supplied by PTR and later stamped by century. And will take cetme wood furniture and Bayonets! The guts are all spanish military cetme parts but they run well. The C308 mags are heavier but are sturdier than the aluminum G3 mags. I reccomend the C308s all dang day to someone who wants an inexpensive G3 clone that is sold for well under a stack. I think PTR and Century make the only relevant clones nowadays.

You sure ptr is building them? Iirc, just some new parts were made by ptr (receiver and bbl), rest is surplus cetme.. dont recall ptr doing all the building tho..

Either way, You can score a used ptr for 800ish..definitely worth checking them both out. Just all new parts in ptr, better sights, paddle mag release etc are big pluses too.

Thanks All. My budget would be for a Century Arms version, used, and factoring in the current new price for one, I’d have $400 for used.

I have one of their recent ones, seems to work just fine for what it's worth. DOES have a top rail (unlike the PTRs) does NOT have the better G3 style rear drum sight.

Atlantic firearms has layaway, but the downside is you have 45 days to pay it off or you lose all the money you put down

Bipod came in today, I love it. Apparently the wide handguard are discontinued so get one if you can, the prices are going up, as are prices on bipods, dont mind the dog toys and mud lolResized_20191102_142029.jpeg

I have a brand new C308 that I picked up at my Gander for $490 out the door. Gun runs like a champ. Definitely would recommend. It does beat the hell out of brass though.

So, I was inserting a mag into my PTR when something hit me really hard in the gut. It was some gray tab. Turns out it was the pievmce that sits up against the mag that keeps the paddle mag release from wiggling. I'm pissed that my expensive gun has a broken piece, but glad that mags insert better into the mag well now. I am going to get an extended mag release for the paddle when HK parts gets their shit together. But it's the principle of having everything on a relatively pricey gun not be broken.20191105_201808.jpg 20191105_201819.jpg

When was that? Needless to say I paid more.

My gander had it on sale for ~$600 with good sam discount or about there. Then I got an additional 20% off since all guns were on sale because the store is closing. They still have one in stock as of last week. Price isn't listed on it. So you'd have to ask them.
