Honestly my initial use will be to bag reloaded ammo. I assume a continuous roll of plastic tube maybe 3-4” wide. For larger batches maybe 1-2 qt bags.

Food is a secondary consideration, but I hear they help reduce freezer burn on meat. Reduced freezer burn on lasagna would be a plus too.

I’m guessing that I want heavy duty bags, lots of suck, and a wide seal, but I don’t really know.

So, what can you tell me?

Thanks

They work great on putting up freezer meat for months years at a time. No freezer burn after some I pulled 2 yrs later.
My FoodSaver machine is 15+ yrs old and still plugging along.
Get cheap bags for the ammo the better bags for food.
Get the machine that you can flip to seal only. Like for lasagna you don't want it all smashed flat and need it to seal sooner that it programmed too.

You don’t mean flip the machine, you mean having a setting for seal only vs suck and seal, right?

Foodsaver works for cold smoked cheese too!
Love smoked cheese, need to learn to make it, I am lower than a neophyte on the smoker scale.

Food saver is the brand I remember, Just didn’t know if they had maintained quality over the years or been surpassed in features.
FoodSaver 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealing System with Starter Kit, 4800 Series, v4840 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DI342IW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_b277zb23PYG58

Great, I’ll check that one out.

FoodSaver runs frequent sales on their website as well, if you're not in a rush (which you're not, if your primary motivator is sealing ammo).

Some other uses (and I'm sure others can chime in with more):
  • mason jars - you need jar sealing cap and a machine with an accessory port
  • Foodsaver canisters - good for foods you don't want crushed by the vacuum - cakes, cookies, casseroles, chips, etc. Need machine w/ accessory port.
  • toilet paper for a bugout/trunk bag - gets it nice and compact and protects it
  • paint pens and other rarely used small fluid containers that dry out over time

Right , able to interrupt the vacuum cycle and seal mid stream.

So is anyone saying that FoodSaver is not the right equipment?

Just make sure the one you get will seal manually without making a complete vacuum cycle. You need this to keep liquid from the seal area.
We make large batches of homemade chili and vac bag it. Use ours for all our wild meats.
My 2 cents is not to get a cheaper one, they won't last.
I buy bags from The Sausage Maker Co., lots cheaper than Bass Pro or Wally World.
