Scott Speed, Red Bull, and the Dragon video

I wonder what his time was?

I wonder if it was a clean run or one of those multiple pass filming events like the Ken Blocks films. I suspect it was the later.

Either way, looks like a blast. That road is fun, but damn dangerous with traffic. The folks piloting the quadcopters are just as if not more impressive than the driving IMO.

Dang wouldn’t that be hella fun. 129 as a closed course?

I’ve always wondered why we don’t have any kind of rally scene around here.

I feel like @hp468 said, that it was a multi shot type deal. I seen several fresh black marks in some of the shots. While impressive and a closed course his lack of lane control just tore my nerves up.

421 through Shady Valley TN comes pretty close. Not nearly as well known and very little traffic. 22 miles, 489 curves.

Used to be an extremely popular spot 15 years ago until a couple bad wrecks happened. For the next couple years after those wrecks, the a-hole cops would nearly write you tickets for your tires being under inflated by 1 pound.

I did that drive once, sorta by accident. I was near Boone and wanted to get to Bristol, and I knew 421 would do it but I had no idea what kind of road it was. Nearly made my wife carsick.

It probably wouldn’t be too hard to get going, it’d just take lobbying the right politicians and some research into how much suspected tax revenue the locals would expect to see from events. Having plans in place to mitigate any environmental impact it may cause would be highly beneficial as well when presenting such a proposal.

I suspect fighting off the environmental whackos would be the biggest hurdle but a WNC rally circuit would certainly be awesome.

There is no lane that you must stay in on a closed course. He was just holding the best lines through the curves.

Years ago there was the Chimney Rock Hill Climb. The road going to the top of Chimney Rock was closed off and cars ran one at a time to the top against the clock. I remember coming through the area as a very young man on the way home from a weekend trip with my parents and just being fascinated by all the race cars.

No idea when or why it stopped.

Oh I understand I just don't like it.

Based on the skid marks on the road in the video following his lines that was not a one run event so Im going with multi shot event

it's a popular stretch of road to go play on...

in other news, my wife and I got married near obispo in CA. She made the mistake of having me drive us from there up to san diego...
there are plenty of sections where you do hairpin turns with a few hundred feet of drop on the inside or outside. But the car had a special button for traction control on curvy roads so we were perfectly fine!
She spent the drive alternating between covering her eyes and looking out at the scenery on the straight sections, which often also had a few hundred feet of drop off the edge of the road.
Not gonna lie, my heart fluttered a couple times when i drove around a curve to see a hairpin just ahead that would have easily killed us (after a few seconds of airtime) if i didn't drive it right.

No doubt its popular road part of what makes it so deadly and even more reason I think it was closed down and mulitshoot event. There is enough traffic on that road normally leaves dont collect on it that much unless no traffic for a period of time and also not a single other car in the video means the road is shut down for them to film it. When there is on coming traffic on that road those lines of crossing the yellow dont work well long term before you are a statistic. Not saying you can’t have fun on it but not many would be running those lines unless road is closed.

I've ridden the Tail of the Dragon, didn't know there was a Dragon. Number of curves and miles sounds familiar though, did they just get the name wrong?

I saw at least one thick patch of leaves that would have caused havoc in the wrong place. You would think they would clean the track for a closed course run.
