So after reading a ton on the 10/22 takedown having POI shifts with scopes mounted on the top of the receiver. Most people either just live with it or use something like the Magpul red dot mount on the barrel end of the takedown. So you either sacrifice magnification for accuracy or the other way around.

So I had an idea. I've got a Leupold Scout scope, 1.5-4x. I have the backpacker stock and the Magpul front optic mount. I started researching scout mounts. I found the ADM and still think it'd be best, but it's $150. DNZ makes a decent one for half the price. Even better, I found the DNZ mount used on AR15.com for $44 shipped. Boom. So I tried it tonight. Pretty happy with the outcome. Eye relief is awesome. You just have to hold your cheek weld a bit higher. Only one of the mount clamps fits the Magpul adapter, but the other gives a partial clamp.

Kill it! Burn it with fire!! That thing is hideous!!!

Seriously though, nice thinking. But yes, ugly. Form over function though.

A company is working on a fix at the moment.
I figured Magpul or someone like an Arisaka would take care of it by just creating an integrated ring set to replace the top piece of the Magpul mount. For now, my ugly version will do!

Eye relief can't be correct....

What do you mean? For the scope? It is fantastic the way it is mounted. I have only looked through 1 other "scout" scope and, in my opinion, my Leupold is more "intermediate" than scout in terms of eye relief. It's hard to photograph through the reticle, but it is outstanding.

Also, I forgot to take a picture, but broken down and nested, the scope obviously adds width and length to the barrel half, but I like that it adds it to that half and not the receiver half. I'll get a pic tonight.

Sometimes I have issues reading AND comprehending at the same time!! I totally missed the Scout part... Sorry.. You wouldn't have any Thin Mints available would you??? LOL...

This is how I skinned that particular cat. YHM picatinny extension. QD rings on the Vortex scout. QD mount on the Vortex RDS so I can switch back and forth.

Looking forward to the solution mentioned upthread.

Looking through your thread and seeing your pics is what led me to wonder about mounting an extended optic mount backwards. How is your cheek weld? I noticed you use the low buttstock riser.

It's not bad but not great. Cheek weld with the scope would be better with the high riser. That would eliminate the ability to use the irons though and would make the RDS less comfortable.

Patiently awaiting a better solution to come to market ;).

I don't even think you need that much rail mounted back over the receiver. But if you had it, then yes you could use lots of standard rings and mounts.
That's Volquartzen's mount that fits their tapped barrel. Seems one could easily be fabbed to fit the Ruger barrel in a similar manner. @Djstorm100 ?

The mount Ratingredneck has is Magpul mount
I think Pink was talking about the one he posted. Seesm like several companies make provisions for use with their forend or barrel, or the factory stock.

Ah my bad!

The one the company is making is a something working with the magpul pic rail.
