Do I just need the buyer to have his FFL send me his information to make the sale and shipment of the rifle legal?

Interstate sale requires FFL for any private firearm transfer (sell, gift, etc) by law ... FEDERAL regulations under ATF. For long guns some states allow out of state purchase of long guns as well as out if staters purchasing in the state FROM FFL’s (NC allows both as long as buyer follows his state’s laws) but no private sales across state lines. Handguns are different ... for handguns all sales must go thru an FFL in the buyer’s home state.

Right. I’m asking if that is all I need.

His FFL might not accept shipments from a non-FFL (if you yourself are shipping it) and make sure that the rifle or if any mags are involved are legal in the state of the buyer.

I sent a rifle to an FFL in another state once, and received one (through my local FFL guy) from a non-FFL once, too.

Some FFL's will not accept a rifle from a non-FFL holder. My terms of sale were it's up to the buyer to find one who will or pay extra for me to ship from an FFL. (That needs to be clarified BEFORE hand.) When receiving a rifle from a non FFL holder, my FFL guy said the sender just had to include a copy of his driver's license and it was ok.

That said, not all PO's are equal!! I initially tried to send the packaged rifle from a Charlotte PO, and it created a kerfuffle because they didn't have a clue what to do. Took 1/2 and hour and I ended up laughing in their faces and leaving. Then I went to a small town PO, declared the package contained a firearm, and got a look that said , "yeah, so?" and everything went smoothly.

These were my past experiences, I claim no legal authority! (So I don't charge $200/hr for my ramblings, either. :))

Shipping out of state, I just verify the FFL number matches the ship-to address on that online verify site and I include a photo copy of my NCDL with the firearm. Ship either via USPS or FFL and create shipment online. Drop off at respective store and wait for feedback to be posted on whichever forum that I sold it from.

I have shipped exactly one lower in my lifetime. I just paid my FFL guy a little extra for him to ship it, FFL to FFL. I didn’t want to deal with whether or not another FFL would accept shipment from a non-FFL. It was a little more expensive, but worth it to me.

YMMV if you don’t have a local guy or shop to deal with. Some shops want to charge you ridiculous amounts to ship a gun.
