I’ll never be a competition 22 shooter nor can I afford to pretend, however...

Due to the great ammo shortage of COVID - ELECTION I am in search of something to do some plinking with. I have plenty of 22 ammo so I’d prefer to shoot that vs the 556 or 308.

I already have a 10-22 and a mkIII. Thinking about a bolt gun and the Ruger Precision is tempting but also keeping my options open.

I know I’ll need glass but will regularly shoot 100 yrd or longer if I end up with the right setup (can get up to 700 but at that point I’ll get the 308 out).

Looking for real world advise from CFF for a rifle that will work for me.

A savage mark ll will get you there for cheap. I can hit a 45 ACP case at 50yards pretty consistently.

I love my Savage FVSR but I bought it primarily as a suppressor host, when this was one of the few threaded options out there.

Now there are a bunch of options and if I were to do it again, I’d probably get a CZ 455 since it’s a great middle ground of price and quality.

I’ve got a CZ452 and two CZ455’s but no CZ457 yet ... just haven’t seen one I want, CZ457 Varmint MTR, and had my gun fund in my pocket. So I bet you can guess my suggestion ...

Vintage iron intrigues me. I like finding them and getting them to perform again.
I have a Remington 521T with a Weaver K-10 scope, shoots incredible tight groups.
1954 Marlin Mountie with a Weaver N Mount and a vintage weaver scope, very accurate.
A new and a vintage Remington Speedmaster
But the most amazing is a Sears Ranger Model 34 (Marlin 65) single shot with iron sights that is a tack driver!
There are several others that are incredibly accurate... it's well worth tryin' those old things that nobody wants anymore.

I have a Savage FVSR in a Boyd’s stock that’ll do what you’re after. Shoot me a message next time you’re headed to Frank’s and I’ll haul it out for you to try.

I have a CZ 455 that I put in a chassis and it's great. My father in law has the RPR22 and he likes it as well. Can't go wrong with either really.

Good suggestion. Also check out Savage's new-er B22. I've had the MKII FVSR and now I have the B22 FVSR. The B22 uses better designed magazines similar to Ruger's and has a much better stock, for not much more moolah.

Currently I have the Savage B22 and the Ruger Precision Rimfire Rifle. I don't think I've quite broken the Savage in yet so I can't speak specifically to it's accuracy, I'm only getting about 2moa now but I expect it to improve. I shot my RPRR today, only 3 groups, and the last one other than a low shot I called (broke before I was ready) the other four went in one hole. Not multiple holes touching, one essentially 22 caliber hole at 50 yds shooting CCI SV. When I first got it it didn't impress me, but it's been getting better, (or maybe the shooter is?). BTW I'm probably only going to keep one of these two. I like the Savage because it can easily be carried around to hunt with. The RPRR is a heavy bench only beast.

My RPR22 must’ve been a Friday at 5 minutes till end-of-shift gun. Everyone raves on them and that prompted me to get one yet I never found a round that would group. Not knocking them in general, just still bitter about the one I had.

Mine seems to have improved over what it was when I got it, but I hear they are 'hit and miss'. You could definitely have gotten a bad one.

I mean my 455 groups considerately better than my father in laws, but for just plinking I think for the price they are adequate. OP, if you get one I highly would recommend using a 10 shot 10/22 mag as they feed a lot better. (In the RPR of course)

The main issue with any "precision" .22 is to find the setup and ammo it likes and stick with it. And that is not always easy, as you can alter its performance dramatically by making small adjustments to the torque on the action screws or adding or tweaking a muzzle device - or tweaking any one of a dozen other things it seems. An awesome .22 can be a maddening bitch sometimes. My CZ455 will shoot rounds through a single hole at 50 yards with the right ammo as long as the suppressor is on tight. But the groups will quickly go to crap if the can gets loose the least little bit. The point being, there is a perfection/learning curve with whatever rifle you buy. I swear by my CZ455, but I also know folks that have put together some insanely accurate Savages and RPRRs on a modest budget.

I’ve got a new Bergara BXR that looks and feels the part. Now if I would just scope and shoot it I’d know how it really behaves.

For a bolt action just get a CZ and be done with it. It’s probably good enough out of the box to do what you need it to do, but if not there is plenty of aftermarket support.

The ammo/rifle mating really is most of the battle. Seen some inexpensive savages put down some sweet groups with cheap ammo, for example. Gun just happens to like something. But “precision” means different things to different people. Deeply obsessed .22 nerdery will have you in a deep well of ammo matching/hoarding.

I have a perfect little TB can and have been meaning to pick up a decent threaded rifle for years now. I was convinced on CZ as I am a shameless CZ whore to begin with, and have friends with nice ones I’ve tried.
But I’m intrigued by the Tikka. Having been exposed to some very nice centerfire Tikkas, it’s hard to imagine it sucking.

Also, the Bergara sounds dang interesting. Nice to have good choices!

I am intrigued by the Tikka as well, and have been casually following the CZ v. Tikka situation on Rimfire Central. Some CZ 457 owners are less than ecstatic about how their rifles are grouping; but the Tikka owners are universally satisfied, with the only real gripes being about the flexibility of the stock. But the CZ sample size is certainly larger, so more opportunities for criticism.

I reckon you know the Tikka is available with a 16.5" barrel, perfect for suppression.

Looks like ChristensenArms has a new entrant in this market:

At half the price of a Volquartsen ... and a third of the price of a Vudoo (which is a grail rimfire for me). Christensen is known for damn fire rifles ... Bentz chambered and carbon fiber threaded barrel are two huge luxuries especially at that price point. Finding one likely would be the only drawback ...

It is a great time to be in rimfire. Lots of new rifles the last couple years and the rise of NRL22 is only helping the sport.

Having owned several CZs, my first suggestion based on the price standpoint is a CZ. I have had 452 and 455, and have been happy with both. You are playing the barrel lottery with any factory rifle but I’ve had good luck with mine. The great thing is the aftermarket support. You can get in cheap and shoot well, and upgrade as you want. Many stock options now, great trigger options, and even upgraded barrel options.

I have heard good things from happy Tikka owners and now Bergara owners, but haven’t actually seen many out there.

If you want to jump all in, you cannot go wrong with the Vudoo. I have had one and out of the box, haven’t shot anything that compared to it. Rimx came out with a similar rifle and seems as good.

My last upgraded CZ 455 was the only one of 5 or so that I’ve had that could almost hang with my Vudoo. Some days, it was about as good, but the Vudoo always was good. I have actually been tempted to get another or try out the Rimx even though I’m not competing. Expensive for just shooting around, but if truly precision and want to hit what you are aiming at, hard to beat it.

Ammo makes the biggest difference. Sure CCI SV can shoot some great groups sometimes, but when it comes to making sure you can always hit the 1/4” swinger, that is where the better ammo makes the difference... Or when shooting long range.

I would point you to the Tikka/Sako T1X.

Really a fine rifle at a good price point.

I vouch for this!! Bolt action ...subsonic ammo.... Spectre II = quiet fun

If you are buying a new gun I would lean towards a CZ 452 or 455. They have a large and very active following which also means lots of intel on upgrades and cool modifications. If you are looking at used, the sky is the limit, as pointed out by previous posters Remington/Winchester, etc. I love the older stuff but I also have beautiful CZ 452 that I really enjoy shooting and for the money it's a fantastic choice.

455 is discontinued. Replaced by the 457.

I have been on the hunt and reading up since before I started this thread.

Decided what I wanted and then couldn’t find it for weeks. Then I did. Ordered and it arrived this week. Going to pick it up today. :)
