Set some traps today.

I haven't actively trapped for hides since the early '80's but I have applied those skills in the past few years to protect the chickens. It is very satisfying watching the wife exact a slow revenge on the predator that took out Mabel, her prized hen.......

I want to get Into it. We have the perfect storm here of human free woods, wildlife, and food for the wildlife. They are growing in numbers here at a rapid pace. I do want to learn how to set and bait a trap. Dog safe ones of course. And once i start catching them, except for the solid black one(he’s gonna he taken to the taxidermy man) the rest will be shot on site and left for buzzards. Full circle and all that jazz

I trap for the live market. No skinning for me.

I not seen a dog proof trap big enough for a yote. They’re mostly for coons and such. I run the no bs k9 extreme jr foot hold traps. Off set jaw with inside and out side lamination 2 coil.

Not dog proof but they aren’t supposed to hurt their legs. @Jp8819 ’s dads dogs were caught in one I think he told me. No damage to the dog, just some hurt feelings

Another good way to avoid broken legs is to shorten your trap chain..... Most legs are broken when they snatch at the end of a long chain. I trapped foxes for yrs with regular old steel traps and never broke a leg.

Yeah I cut the chain down on mine and run a shock spring
People who haven't done it have a tendency to think trapping is cruel to the animals. If the correct measures are taken the animal really isn't hurt, just held there until you get it out. Sounds like you know what you're doing.

Yeah most people thing your setting large bear traps with teeth on them that dig into the leg. I am just getting started into trapping. I've shadowed and helped my buddy for the past 2 seasons. I finally bought me some traps this year and finally set some of them today on some land I got to trap. There was note scat everywhere. I set 4 traps on the place hope to have one or twin the morning. We trap for the live market so its important to have little to no foot damage. If the foot is messed up the buyer won't pay top dollar for them.

IMG_23881.JPG IMG_24101.JPG Ones guy that traps our property uses have about a 1/2 gap when fully closed and no teeth. Like brian mention two of my parents dogs have found them and we just let them out no harm done. Only thing it seem to hurt was there feelings soon as you let them out they were fine and acted normal. It catches right behind the paw on a coyote. It helps with not catching some of the trash(coons and small varmits) and such as well. Think he is up to 12 coyotes for the year in about 3-4 weeks of trapping this year. Last year he caught 22 coyotes for the year and couple foxes. You can see the traps in the pictures above and thats from this year. When he sets them its in a small hole with loose dry dirt covering the hole so you would not know they are there unless you know what you are looking for.

I have had traps dug up if that's what you mean by if I trap. Still learning, mostly self taught and youtube along with a coworker's advice who is a solid outdoorsman. He's never trapped coyotes or foxes though so I'm on my own.

Curious about this also. I have on several occasions seen people transporting live coyotes in the big wire dog cages in back of pick up trucks. Always wondered what they were doing.
People train fox dogs with them

I trapped as a kid before coyotes came to Kentucky. Possums & coons, skunks, & foxes with snares in those days. I don't know if snares are legal these days. I can remember getting $1 for possums.

My bro-in-law is a big trapper; he traps year-round (nuisance and seasonal). He has gotten coyotes, foxes, beavers, mink, otters....makes a pretty decent chunk of change selling the furs.

I have been with him a few times, thought about getting into it, but just too much work for me.

Fox pens buy them. This is also part of the reason there are so many of the damn things around now. IMHO it is too late to do anything but the practice should have been outlawed or at least laws should have been passed to force the pens to sterilize them before they were released. It wouldnt hurt my feelings if they were treated like anyother invasieve species and were required to be killed if caught.

All I ever did when i was young.
Fox, coon, muskrat. With the occasional otter, mink and nutria thrown in.
Have a pic somewhere with about 200 coon hides hanging. Used to love the dogs too. Long cold stary nights with black and tans, redbones and walkers.
Still have my traps. Some probably 50 years old.

Pulled some out the other day. Some still work pretty good. The springs need to be replaced on a lot of them.
This thread got me fired up again. Going to make some coyote sets on the property, just for sh:t$ and giggles.
Glad I could spark that fire!

I'm not sure about NC, but SC made it illegal to relocate a live coyote. You also need to "register" any property you plan to night hunt on as well.

It depends on county and also time of year here in NC. Guilford co I think you can only transport them few months in fall and winter but think randolph and alamance is year round.

Set a few traps today. Got my k9 extreme jr. Out waiting on Wiley coyote. Hope to have a couple in the morning. Anyone else trap?

After looking up the traps you're using, I will be. Thanks for this.

I trapped rabbits when I was a kid, and sold them to a beagle club. The 'yotes are getting too close, too often.

I caught a grey fox this morning in them. Love the traps so far.

Catch and release? Lol.

Edit: Now that I think about it, if you wanted to release something that you weren't after (or even if you were just going to keep it alive), how do you do that without getting chewed on?

Lol no. I use a catch pole I made. If anyone needs one around the triad I can make you one. They work great for handling the live animals.

Nice ole gray fox! Guy that traps for us said they are the most fiesty and vicious 8 pounds you will get on the end of stick besides a big cat and only thing that has ever bit him and even tried was gray foxes. He does not like getting them or big cats out of traps luckly cats are not in the area yet just when he goes down east couple times a year he has to worry about them but doesn't mind coyotes they have all tried to run from him when he gets them out of the traps.
