Guess this sort of fits in Fitness and nutrition (didn't see a better spot). I suspect my wife may have broken out in shingles. OTC pain medication doesn't seem to bring enough relief. I did get her some calamine lotion (by request) and ordered her a bottle of full spectrum CBD (anti inflammatory) but she's in pain and I hate seeing her that way. Been trying to get her to go see someone, even the urgent care, but so far she's refused.

Anyone here who has dealt with it and can offer any suggestions?

Also, is getting the vaccine effective even after you've had it once?

Burow’s solution.

You can get it at about any drug store OTC…Domeboro is the brand name. It will be in powder form, so you’ll have to mix it with water (I used distilled). A quart mason jar works great. Get a box of gauze pads while you are there (2x2s, 3x3s or 4x4s).

After you get the solution mixed, dunk a piece of gauze, place it on the affected area and let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes…do this 3x/day, if you can.

I went to the doc, she prescribed the herpes medication and I broke out in hives. She responded with suck it up and let it run its course.

My point is, go to the doctor. There are treatment methods. It's still going to be miserable but the doctor could perscribe things that may speed recovery and dull the symptoms.

I swear I have had some symptoms of a breakout again but never went into full blown shingles.

The computer says the local Walgreens has it stock. Thx.

Anytime👍

I’ve had shingles 3x. Every time it has shown up in the same spot and the affected area had been roughly the same size…center of my back and around 1”-1.5” in diameter.

First time I had it was 17….my Doc is the one who suggested Burow’s.

Sorry to hear she’s in so much pain. Prayers for a fast recovery.

The sooner you get a antiviral to treat it from the dr the better chance it has of helping or atleast thats what they told me. If not it can be long several days with them. I had what I would guess is a mild case years ago and caught them fairly early and they def were not fun.

Doesn’t help that she’s coming off a case of getting a good dose of chiggers or some other skin parasite that ivermectin cream and then permethrin treated. She thought she was re-infested. Then the pinched nerve pain hit, followed by the pins and needles that became a rash on the same side of her body, but other areas. I think she thought it was another bug infestation.

Gabapentin
that sounds familiar, and I had to look it up, but yes, it is used to stop the nerve pain associated with shingles. Unlike the chiggers, this doesn’t itch, but burns.

Gabapentin
That's what got me through. After she runs her course tell her to get the Shingrix vaccine to help prevent another bout. If you've had chicken pox the virus now lives in your central nervous system and never is gone.

When I had it I got a prescription for Gabapentin and Lidocaine 5% patches (both prescription). I also found the OTC med with the highest Lidocaine percent (4%) which ended up being Preparation H (or some variant/generic) cream. Lidocaine patch is to be worn for 12 hours. Applied the cream when not using the Lidoderm patch. My wife also soaked a paper towel with water and added tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and lavender to apply over the site. I was around 48 when I got it. 50 is the recommended age for the vaccines. Since I had Shingles before age 50 my insurance approved me to get Zostavax then Shingrix.

*Forgot to mention one other thing. Wear an abdominal binder if it is on your side. It sounds counterintuitive but it helps.
