Shopping at PX and Commisary

Are the prices that much better than shopping at like Aldis?

It depends on what you're buying. Most things are competitive, some are overpriced, and some are really good deals.
Generally speaking, the biggest savings are on meats at the Comissary. There is no tax...but there is a surcharge. Not quite equal to what NC Sales Tax would be.
The wife and I go to Ft Jackson quarterly and get four or five coolers full of meats and freeze them. We save about $150 a month average doing that.

Buying guns there can be nice

Buddy of mine got some sweet deals at the Bragg PX, but they didn't start selling guns there till after I retired. Wouldn't mind taking a look-see, but the 2 hour drive to experience greater metropolitan Braghdad just ain't worth it to me.

If it is convenient to shop there all the time then you'll get a sense for deals. I think high ticket items like washers or gun safe can make a difference with no tax.

Commissary case-lot sales you can save huge, if you don't mind buying bulk. Using coupons at the commissary and watching their sales...you can save significantly weekly. This is compared to Food Lion...I don't do Aldis, so don't know about them.

The main PX's...if you hit the sales, you can save, but generally prices are competitive with off-post establishments. The real PX savings are in the specialty shops and big-ticket items, like the appliance/furniture store, automotive, the firearms counters (there are two on Bragg...hit the sales, and ammo is normally WAY OVERPRICED)...and everything is tax free and no surcharge at PX.

Gas is not as cheap on post as it once was and prices are comparable to off post...and there is NO diesel on post at all.

Ding, ding; perfect answer !! BTW, one thing we may have here... the crowds are not bad at all at Bragg PX and Commissary. I just picked up something for the wife, not bad crowds at all. I REALLY hate going to the malls this time of year !!!

The thing I really don't like...when they got rid of the Class VI stores and combined the alcohol sales into the expanded gas station shoppettes...I miss the class VI stores and especially their holiday sales, just not the same...

Theres no dedicated VI at Bragg anymore? Damn...
I'll have to check Jackson next time we're down there and see. I know for a fact theres still a dedicated VI at Gordon. Most of the time, I hit that up when I spend a weekend in Augusta.

They are gone...the "pines" store off Yadkin was bulldozed to make way for the new highway that came through, sales were consolidated into the gas station shoppette at the south post mall...and, get this, the one that was up by the north post commissary is now a Cold Stone Creamery and its sales were consolidated into the expanded north post shoppette/gas station at the other end of the complex.

It is a kindler, gentler world these days...gone are the days of pushing a shopping cart through the class VI and filling it up twice a month...memories.

they may be getting few and far between but they aren’t completely gone. FT Sam Houston still has a class VI.
