Is that a thing? Why would that be a desirable thing? I can't conceive of the physics here being an argument for more accuracy, but I don't know anything.

To shoot sabot-ed slugs more accurately at longer ranges.

A lot of northern/populous states have/had rules in place against deer hunting with rifles. Hence the sabot slug market.
 
I have a beretta 390 st with a rifles barrel that I inherited from my grandfather who lived in Illinois from my understand they weren’t allowed a “rifle” season they had to use rifles shotguns with slugs and only get that for two weeks. I think it’s one of those things that people made as a “loop hole” to stricter rifle law states.
