SIG M17

I bought some raffle tickets for an M-18 from the Marine Corp League . I had never paid much attention to the .mil variant of the P320 till then.
They have thumb safeties. I don’t like thumb safeties on a polymer blaster.

Guess I the odd ball then, M18 here with the thumb safety..love it, shoots wonderful and accurate!!! With a red dot (do your research because you have to make sure which one bolts up) I am making shots easily and better than my other pistol….might be the red dot because my others with a red dot shoot better now.. but the sig is a excellent platform and should not be overlooked.

Not a huge fan of the m17. The grip is meh, and the frame is really light. The p320 X modules with the tungsten weights, however, make it much more balanced and pleasant to shoot.

I have kinda been bouncing around the m9A4, glock 19x, or the m18 as a next purchase. I found out I didn't like shooting the M9 so much, or at least not enough to justify $1000!

Glocks are glocks, I have 2 and they just work. Haven't shot a p320 yet. There seem to be some controversy regarding their reliability and ruggedness. Apparently their extractors can get bent easily and jam up the slide. So now I'm kind of considering the Glock out of the 3

What's your angle? Better stated, what is the purpose of the handgun / how do you intend to use it?

I've had one for a couple years now. Have shot it in IDPA & Run & Gun competitions. I've also shot them in the Army. I'd say I shoot the M17 better than the M9 as proven by my qualification stores, could also just have gotten better at pistol shooting over the years too I suppose.

Overall they are a good gun. Are they they "best" gun, no. However, I wouldn't feel at a disadvantage if I had to use one for professional / duty usage. They are a bit "tall" esp. depending if/on what dot you want to mount to it.

I know alot of people get hung up about the safety... yeah, I don't care for it, but it's actually well designed and doesn't affect the feel or performance any. It's easy to train around to get used to it. If you hate it that much you can always get the version without the safety. Wouldn't be a "true" M17 clone tho if that's what your after.

I've owned at one time or another an example of every Army general issue handgun from the SAA to the M9 (except the Colt .38 long and .32/.380s). Just wondering if the M17 is worth finishing up the run with.

Yes, then absolutely. That is pretty much the reason I still have mine, for collector's purposes

It is a very capable gun and I actually enjoy shooting it. I believe you can get the same holster the Army uses from Safariland also to complete the setup.

I have an M18 and it’s a great shooting pistol. I don’t ever use the safety and it actually makes a nice rest for my thumb.

If you want to get as close to USGI as you can in a brand new pistol, I think the M17 and M18 POW from Proven Arms are the way to go. They're built on the same production lines and have the same markings as the issue pistols.

If you want actual USGI, surplus M17s are available on the secondary market. I picked up two of them when they were first available.

This one was assigned to P (Predator) Troop, 4th Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment.

And this was assigned to D Company, 1/506th Inf, 1st BCT, 101st Airborne.

Those surplus pistols are nifty but the prices they were asking were insane IMO. Glad you were able to snag two. Out of curiosity, how do you know what unit's they were assigned to? Was that included on a Cert of Authencity of something like that?

What's ironic is that the vast majority of Army guns look exactly like the commercial version with the black controls. There are a few small differences; the biggest being the Army guns only say M17 not P320 & M17 like the civ guns.

I submitted a freedom of information act (FOIA) request to the Army, and the response included the units to which they were assigned. Interestingly enough (at least to me), the 1st BCT of the 101st replaced the 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Iraq in January 2019, so both pistols were likely in Iraq at the same time.
