Sighting in AR for home defense

Well you have received almost all the answers there are to this question...
except for one

go take a carbine class

as others have hinted at, this is a training issue. it doesn't matter WHAT your zero is, as long as you know your zero and you know how to work it at different ranges when you need to. Because you're responsible for each bullet you shoot.
Any carbine class SHOULD at least mention zeros, and have you learning poa/poi for your zero. some zeros work well enough at many ranges, some zeros work great at a small subset of ranges, but very poorly at anything outside those.

everything in shooting is tradeoffs. 5.56 is a weak poodle shooter round, but you get a lot of shots in the same weight as the one .50bmg API that will stop a light armored truck and set it on fire. The A2 grip works well enough for most people. i hate it.

I'm just curious if anyone has an AR solely for home defense purposes and, if so, how many yards do you have sighted in at? My assumption is that it would likely be better to have it sighted in somewhere around 15 yards?
If you are concerned with zeroing, try the 32 yard zero, see video:

Also, at that distance it is important to know your holdover. On holographic sights (Prisms) like Eotechs or Primary Arms/Vortexes, typically you put the bottom-center of the circle on what you want to hit. As others have mentioned, it is important to go to the range and actually confirm this so you know where your rounds will go, but with a typical mount and height over bore, around the bottom of a holographic ring. For a red dot, I have heard people say their holds are around the top of the head/hairline as a reference.

To be honest, center mass with a non-crazy zero and the shots will go where they need to.

My ar sights are marked 50/200 which is the setting I use.
There's also a 25/300 setting
And yes I've checked and yes it works
I think it's called the parabolic arch

I use the 50/200 zero, with a 1x6 LPVO. I have actually confirmed all the way out to 300 yards. At home clearing distance itā€™s about 1.5 inches low, so aim for the forehead to make face shots.
