News reports police stood by and made no arrests (should be made no attempt to arrest), will they
start burning down buildings like they did in Ferguson and Baltimore?

No doubt the Governor will make another 'they must come down' speech Tuesday.

The vacuum will be filled with some other statue/object, and this cycle of being offended will continue perpetually.

I agree.. when will this stop? Where will be the accountability?? There is Video evidence of perpetrators

you know all hell would break loose if an MLK statue was toppled!!!!

This was nothing more than spoiled, entitled brats having a summer party before school starts.
There was no racial outrage.
There was no reason to participate other than being on TV.
There was only drunk college kids vandalizing state property.
This was not a statement against anything except being away from mommy and daddy and bored.
Every student identified should be expelled for life.
If you look at the footage, it is mainly white kids with no iron in the fire.
This was nothing more than criminal trespassing and felony vandalism.
Spoiled, entitled brats....

Now now... let's allow this to play for a minute. If no charges come, this gives anyone, and EVERYONE the ability to destroy any statue they aren't comfortable with.

If it falls in similar suit of the Durham statue toppling, then all the statues are fair game for destruction. Just saying.

However, looking at this from a larger prospective. We know outside influences are stirring unrest in our nation. I believe it has reached a tipping point where they no longer have to stir the pot, and it is running on it's own. What better way to destabilize a nation than promote civil unrest.

It's not as if UNC campus police or Chapel hill police had any prior notice that such a crime may be commited.
That said, LE is a reactive organization and cannot police a crime that has not yet occured.

That's a crock. The police perform preventative intervention all the time. That's their specific justification for DUI checkpoints.

I would venture a guess their management told them to allow it to happen. I bet that was event communicated in writing.
This is the "official" message that was sent out yesterday at 3:30. They knew. They are complicit:
Dear Carolina Community:

As we start a new school year and welcome students, faculty and staff to our campus, we would like to take a moment to remind everyone of a few critical policies and state laws governing free speech. Carolina is a public university, and we have a long tradition of protecting free speech. The free exchange of ideas is what makes ours a vibrant community, and we will continue to protect that right. At the same time, we are equally committed to the safety of our campus community.

We must uphold the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as a public institution, in addition to the General Assembly’s North Carolina Restore and Preserve Free Speech Act and a Board of Governors policy on free speech and free expression in the UNC System, both enacted in 2017.

At Carolina, like all public universities, you will have the opportunity to hear from a wide range of speakers expressing many different viewpoints. Speakers may be invited by a school, department, or student organization, among others on our campus. The University, under certain conditions, rents some University facilities to speakers for their events. Public speech is also allowed in designated outside areas as long as the speech is not disruptive to the operation of the University.

Under the First Amendment, we cannot prohibit a person from speaking on campus because the University community does not agree with what that person has to say or because the speech is offensive to most people. However, it is critical that the campus community understands that complying with the law does not mean the University – in any way – endorses such speech. Just as the University cannot refuse access based on the content of someone’s speech, the University must protect the safety of the speaker and attendees regardless of content. However, when speech crosses into incitement to riot or other violent acts, the law permits the University to take immediate action to enforce security, such as dispersing and managing crowds.

We look forward to a safe school year for everyone.

Sincerely,

Winston Crisp
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Mark Merritt
Vice Chancellor and General Counsel

Jeff McCracken
Chief of Police

Note WHO signed this letter.

Now this is what they sent out this morning...
Dear Carolina Community:

As you are probably aware, a group from among an estimated crowd of 250 protesters brought down the Confederate Monument on our campus last night.

The monument has been divisive for years, and its presence has been a source of frustration for many people not only on our campus but throughout the community.

However, last night’s actions were unlawful and dangerous, and we are very fortunate that no one was injured. The police are investigating the vandalism and assessing the full extent of the damage.

I appreciate the actions taken by the police to ensure the community’s safety and will keep you informed as additional information is available.

Sincerely,

Carol L. Folt
What a total crock of BS. Though I normally can't stand to listen to him because it is so dumbed down, the KC O'Dea show had it right - remove all funding from the university. As he put it, I'll be damned if I am going to subsidize this place and the perpetrators need to be expelled.

Those who signed that initial release should be removed from their jobs over this, because they were complicit with and incited the behavior.

Nobody has time to put up with shit like this.
And I am sick to death of hearing this "white privilege" crap

I would like to know why they think this statue only memorializes white soldiers?
Read a little history kids, they won't learn true history in CH, just what fits the left's agenda. And some of the crowd sure looked like Antifas to me, stirring the pot maybe?

Those statues are dedicated to the men who fought on the Confederate side, so does this dedication not also apply to the American Indians and Blacks that fought on the confederate side? About 24,000 native Americans and 10,000 blacks fought on that side. No doubt not a majority, but of those who fought certainly not all were white privileged Americans.

If these monuments stand for Americans who stood up and believed in their cause enough to fight for it, destruction of these monuments is a deceleration that Americans should not be allowed to stand for what they believe in, right or wrong.

Look for book turnings at CH and other universities across our nation before this is all over.

Hey! Look! They wiped out racisim! Good for them.

They can pull this crap off at liberal run UNC, but I'd like to see them try it in Small Town America. There's a lot of places to hide bodies in them hills.

Will they destroy the monument at the State Capital next?

Will the protestors, aka vandals, storm the library and start burning books they find offensive?

I guarantee you that ^^^ this ^^^ is what many, including government want. They don't want people to be willing to stand on their principles and fight for them. They want you to stay asleep, comply, and believe all is just and righteous because there was some sort of "vote".

One female student interviewed said she did not feel safe with the statue up there.

The idiots and mobs have won. They arrested and charged the idiots that pulled down the statue in Durham and as soon as it got to court, the judge dismissed the case faster than you can say "the fix was in". Sam sat there for over 100yrs and his gun never went off. Because...wink if you know the joke.

A few years ago, @Chdamn and I had a conversation about race relations. He described what was, or rather, is happening in this country as stretching a rubber band. That rubber band just got pulled tighter last night. When it finally snaps it's going to be very ugly.

I Agee that in order for change to be Carried our a dialogue must be established BUT taking illegal actions should be punished. The cops ignoring their legal duty to uphold the law should in itself be Criminal and they should no longer be allowed to hold office.

Only after they order their brown shirts and armbands.... or maybe it will be black this time with masks, they seem to already have plenty of those.

They will push and push and push and this whole thing will cave in on their heads.
Then they will cry and blame everyone for the pain they feel.
Stop bitching, get to work at making your life what you want it to be, stop blaming people and statues for your failures.

Don't forget, these snowflakes probably are receiving financial aid with your taxpayer money. I wonder if the school will expel them or at least deny them financial aid ? (sarcasm intended)

No matter what anyone's feelings are this is still supposed to be a republic. A republic's only shield is the rule of law. Granted, over the years we have lost our way, but I still held out hope that things could be righted, so long as there was some semblance of the rule of law.

When we allow mobs to terrorize, to vandalize and destroy property that does not belong to them, all under the view of officers supposedly sworn to uphold the rule of law we are no longer a republic. If the law does not protect everyone then it protects no one.

Prepare yourselves and your families.

As you await the day, lay in supplies and sharpen the point of your spear.

Be ready no matter where you may be when this one kicks off.

This war will be wars within the states. No battle lines. It will be an insurgency.

That generation just received positive reinforcement that acting out with violence and anger carries no consequences. They also received negative reinforcement about working with the government and community to affect change.

By letting the mob do their job with a wink and a nod that "what you are doing is right and just", the Governor, faculty, police, and administration have opened the door to an ANTIFA rebellion against the government.
