Silent Sam statue toppled at UNC

It just had to do with smearing paint all over it, which didn’t cost anything to clean up since the statue was destroyed. So, you know, no harm no foul.

There were clean up cost associated with her vandalism. Should she not have to pay for that at the least?

"Josh Plates, a supervisor for exterior maintenance at UNC, said during his testimony that it took two hours on April 30, and then two additional days, for a total of nine people to use power-washing tools and wire brushes to remove the ink and blood from Silent Sam. The cleanup cost about $4,000, he said."

I know...I think you miss the point that I was commenting on someone who wanted to dismiss topic because of a detail as opposed to subject at hand. That being damage to the statue.

I assume here that you’re referring to me. I wasn’t dismissing the topic. I was clarifying that the statue wasn’t destroyed, but rather defaced. I happen to agree with your wet tissue comment. I think it should be put back where it was, given protection, and those responsible for the vandalism need to face a penalty severe enough that nobody tries it again.

Nope, not you.

Athletes petition against $5M building on UNC campus to house Silent Sam statue

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Current and former University of North Carolina athletes are speaking out against new plans for the Silent Sam statue.

More than 100 signed a petition against a new $5 million building to house the statue.

The petition started Tuesday, but it already features several prominent athletes, including several current and former basketball and football players.

“It is very clear that if the University of North Carolina is to remain committed to diversity and inclusion, that symbol of division and racial violence cannot remain on campus,” said fencer Ezra Baeli-Wing.

The petition suggests the school label the monument a public safety threat to get around a state law preventing its removal from campus.

Earlier this month, the school’s board of trustees proposed the plan for the building, which would create a new history and education center on campus to house the controversial monument.

When do I get to pick the state laws I follow and expect no consequences or repercussions? For instance, I'd like to buy and sell firearms without requiring a permission slip? Maybe if I label that permit a public safety infringement I don't have to do it?

That is not the state law I would break. I'd think BIGGER and more profitable.

you mean, compete with the state by running my own gambling house? Or growing some choice herbs for private consumption (and consumption of a few of my closest 100 friends?)

I guess we know why he's an athlete and not an academic. That's also why the school got itself in such hot water over its "papers only" classes which were nothing but a ruse to get around grade requirements for ball bouncers.

And again...as an alumni, this alienates me even further.

Recently the head coach in the gym here at work struck up a conversation with me where she asked what school I went to. I told her UNC and she said that since her and her husband moved here from somewhere out west a year ago they haven't adopted a new team here to cheer for. I didn't recommend UNC.

Not true fans if they can just choose another team so it seems they would fit right in with the UNC walmart crowd.

I love the part of the statement that says the state needs to be diverse by getting rid of diversity.

Well, I think it’s more trying to get acclimated with local teams and stuff. We all chose “our teams” at some point. They just don’t have a lot of Iowa sports here in NC.

"80 TAs at Chapel Hill are currently refusing to post grades unless the plan to put a building around Silent Sam is scrapped. 2000 students are currently affected. Some students won't be able to graduate, which would cost them any jobs they had lined up. ROTC students are at risk of losing their commissions. Event better, some students who are here on student visas may lose their visas if their grades don't get reported."

I found this while scouring the internet for student / alumni opinions on what is happening now.

"which would create a new history and education center on campus"

This is the real problem, heh.

In case it was unclear as to whether "the line" had been crossed, this illustrates that it has in fact been crossed.

I'd be threatening some bodily harm unto said teacher's pets.

I'd be telling some TAs that they would be personally sued for breach of contract or similar, for failing to fulfill duties for which they had been compensated. You want to make a personal statement? Fine, it's now personal. You can't hid behind the university's skirts for such an asinine statement. Consequences, etc.

I'm thinking the university is about experience some massive lawsuits if that happens. Plus all 80 TA's should be fired for breech of contract

I wonder what would happen if all the athletes said they were gonna quit playing until plans to move the statue were scrapped? People would probably be more upset over that than they would be over their grades being withheld!!

It's so sad :) the UNC President's job is on the line. She has already expressed her wish that Silent Sam would go away. Unfortunately -for her- she could be fired immediately if she openly violated that pesky state law about historic statues.

Blackmail Added to Mob Rule on UNC Activists’ Resumes

The activists' demands, along with the removal of the statue, include:

  • Changes to a plan for increased campus security,
  • "Increased wages for graduate and campus workers, the majority of whom make less than a living wage,"
  • "The abolition of fees for all graduate workers,"
  • "Dental insurance for graduate workers," and
  • "Reduced parking fees for all workers."

What will happen when future schools, teams, employers see that the 'candidate' protests on paid time?

This is proof that their education has been successful.

They have been trained, now they are flexing their wings, in the field of Tyranny of the Bureaucrat.

If they want all those benefits I know a GREAT organization (well 5 actually) that would love to have them if they are qualified (and the qualifications really aren't that high). Very decent pay, housing, medical, dental, vision, high security work and living enviromment, education, environmentalism, free parking, sexual harassment training on a very consistemt basis along with the equal opportunity training, the list goes on. I'm not in the recruiting field for my organization anymore but I can get them in touch with somebody to get them on the path to all these fantastic benefits. There's also a slew of fun activities to acompany these benefits as well.

He's a fencer, not a ball bouncer. I doubt he's there on scholarship or gets special housing, meal service, classes.

Although none of it excuses the stupid statements.

Doubtful. No one is going to fire her over "violating" the law. The screeching would be deafening if it were to happen. She want's it gone, she's smart enough to know she just can't make it so. The protests and outcry make it easier for her to get rid of it.

She needs to go for a lot of reasons, making her a martyr over the statue would be a bad idea.

I will not be blackmailed, disband the school staff.

CD

Shut down the school except for the Med/Dental/Nursing parts. At least that part offers some hope of gainful employment.

There are other business/law schools in the state, one less won't matter that much.

As for the rest of it, would anyone really miss it?

*Full disclosure: I may or may not be a N.C. State fan. :)

Within this posted quote lies my opinion......

“Over 100 current and FORMER atheletes” signed a petition.....

How many current athletes are there? 1,000? Just a guess as I have no clue or care to know, much less the yearly total student number. So let’s say 10% of the current students atheletes signed this...

But wait it includes former SA’s as well. So let’s say that 1,000 each for a decade. 10,000 total SA. 100 signed. So 1% between current and former..... At the made up numbers I guessed at.

So somewhere around/between 90-99% of current and former student athletes either don’t support this or don’t give a crap....

Why is this even a statistic worth considering?? IMO it’s NOT. It’s never a good idea for a minority (much less a significant one like here) to be the reason for any kind of dynamic change to the whole...

For me this whole fiasco around the country amounts to a group reserving a room at a honky-tonk bar and then being pissed that the establishment can’t readily cater to playing Beyoncé or Justin Beaver.
