I finally got my HF stuff together and have started investigating the different bands. I understand that we're in a period of poor propagation in the higher frequency bands due to the lull in sunspot activity. When I've tuned into the different bands and set the waterfall display to wide I can see lots of signals across the spectrum, including outside the ham bands, with one notable exception: six meters. On this band, I don't even see anything, and barely enough noise really to break carrier squelch. I checked and the six meters is on the HF input (the other is just 2m and 70cm). I'm running an OCF dipole that has shown the ability to receive outside it's resonant areas.

Is this normal or is there something "wrong" with my setup? If this is normal, it's kind of unfortunate because 6m is the only HF band open to technician class operators.

I'm not following your meaning?

It struck me as an anomaly that even the bs kground noise seems lower and there are no signals to be found in that area to where it makes me question if there is a technical issue with my equipment,

We're approaching a very low part of the sunspot cycle... as such 6 is not often open for long periods of time like other bands are. It's challenging , but when 6 is open it can be open worldwide with very low power .

By the way, 10m is open to Tech's too. You'll find that it is similar to 6 but open more often.
