First off being left handed i know the correct answer is to shoot a rifle with a brass deflector. I have an AR, that was built as a spare gun, out of spare parts, and something my wife can shoot on occasion. My question is this: can anything be tweeked to make the rifle not throw cases back in my face when i shoot it? I dont really want to mess with the gun too much as its a beater and it works very well as it sits. Just a curiosity thing for me. What say the brain trust?

IRC: back in the olden days there was a clip on thingie
Yes there was, i looked them up, they were made to smap into/onto the carry handle. This gun is a flat top. I should just grab an upper and swap it to make it right, but i was really looking for the good enough solution on this one.

If you try a lighter buffer (or more gas) it you may be able to get ejection out at like 3:00 rather than 4-5:00.

Might help.

That would work just fine for me. I have been shooting 55gr steel case, would a hotter load acomplish the same thing? Just need them to go past my head.

I shoot lefty style as well. My ArmaLite was bad for throwing brass into my face for the first few hundred rounds. It was actually throwing them just over the deflector. I did put a rail mounted accessory deflector on it for about a year. They work great, but the added 'ding' caused by brass hitting it can take some getting used to.

After a year, I took the deflector off, and noticed that it no longer threw brass into my face. It now ejects to the side/rear, as its supposed to. I guess the gun just needed some breaking in.

Well i am used to shooting ak's so i cant hear anything except the "twang" of the buffer any way, so a ding wouldn't bother me much.

Might be cheaper to just go with an upper with a deflector.

But normally as gas volume increases (or bcg/buffer weight decreases) the brass starts walking forward towards the front of the gun. But doing that is kind of a bandaid, as optimal seems to be about 4:00 ejection, imo.
You see a lot of over gassed guns (usually because gas port is drilled larger than it needs to be) throwing brass forward.

If I was a lefty, I would consider finding some lefty upper receivers. These are just my non-expert opinions.

I know @JBoyette is a lefty who has tons of experience with this. Maybe he's the guy to talk to.

Roger all of that. This is the spare gun for a back up and wife's limited usuage, hence the not wanting to do a lot to it. She is a righty and it suits her just fine. I just sold my rifle and am starting over on a new one now that i know better what i want. Lefty upper is definitly on the list of wants.
