Any other skier's here?

I first learned to ski with 5th SFGA in New Mexico back in 86' But really learned down hill and cross country skiing will assigned to 1/10th SFGA in Bad Tolz, Germany 88-90' Tolz is right in front of the German Alps (Mountains 2 KM behind the barracks). Was issued a ski pass to the local slops just down the road. One of my best days in the Army was doing a SCUBA dive (indoor pool) for PT, parachute jump out of a UH-1H after breakfast and downhill skiing for the rest of the day (air/land/sea infil in one day). Later back in 1/10 but in Stuttgart Germany 00-03'. That's 6 yrs of Alpine skiing. So, every time I look at this snow covered mountains here in Afghanistan, I just want to go skiing. Dang war :(

I grew up about 45 minutes from Snow Shoe in WV. Only problem was I was a poor kid growing up so could never afford it. I did go with the church group a few times and loved it.

Those mountains look spectacular CD! I'd love to ski terrain like that.

My sister taught me to ski around 1977-78. I taught my wife and daughter about ten years later. I taught my grandkids last year!
I've skied Appalachian, Sugar and Beech in NC, Snowshoe and Winterplace in WV, Jack Frost in the Pocono Mtns of PA, and Big Sky Montana.
All downhill with black diamonds in Montana and double diamonds in WV. My knees can't do the moguls anymore. But I still love the feel of cutting down the mountainside like a bullet!

I grew up on small mountains in Central Maine. Ski patrol 89 & 90.
Hunted whitetail on CC ski and snowshoe.

My great uncle used to tell war stories about his Alpine Recon days in Italy WWII.
As a youngin' I was on CC skis with a BB gun, made my own winter camo from bedsheets.

Been skiing a handful of times at Beech mountain and Sugar, got the hang of it pretty quick but go so infrequently have to relearn for a bit each time. Always wanted to go to a “real” ski place up north but hasn’t been in the cards just yet. Couple small kids so will be a bit later in life before that is a possibility again.

Tuckerman's Ravine, Hilman's Highway, Outer Limits, double black diamonds, poaching closed trails and bashing the bumps, oh those were the days. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Memory Lane.

I used to race GS and Slalom in college for our club team. After college, I moved to Denver for three years and skied around 30 days a year. I have been to almost every resort in Colorado and Utah. I love me some downhill skiing. This year’s trip is to Park City but my favorite place is Snowbird UT. Amazing snow and terrain there. I also fell all the way down Great Scott one time there.

Did a fair amount of boarding in AK, never touched skis for downhill.

We x-country skied and snowshoed for gym/PE in grade school with decent commercial gear. Didn't do it again til ROTC at UAF with less nice mil gear. Prefer the snowmobile for covering distances.

Learned to ski in the German Alps while I was stationed in Stuttgart in '91. Ended up skiing close to 30 days a year for the next 3 years. Absolutely loved it & was 190cm GS boards my first season. Loved railing the turns & flying down the mountain, but nothing topped tree skiing fresh powder in the Black Forest. Fairly tame terrain, but floating through the woods in thigh deep powder was surreal.

Skied the Poconos (boring AF, btw- lame terrain & nothing approaching a true black diamond) & discovered my knees no longer enjoyed skiing as much as I did. Thought about trying snowboarding, but that would likely only add my laundry list of orthopedic injuries.

Hate I never got a chance to ski out west, but at least I got to ski Germany, Austria & Switzerland.

Skiing is dangerous!
What isn't?

Loved to cross country ski also. Only thing I hated was skiing with an Ahkio Scow Sled. Wasn't pulling it on flat ground but controlling in steep desents.

Did miss two military skiing trips. When I first got to Germany my team was in Norway skiing and just before I left, I was recovering from a blast injury (blew myself up making a IED, minor injuries) when my team went to Austria way up in the Alps.

Used to go quite often to Snow Shoe and Winterplace. I love it. I remember being on the slopes way past the normal season at winterplace. 60 degrees, me in a t-shirt and the only snow there was on the slopes. (The mess of cig butts and dropped ski poles on the bare ground under the ski lifts was pretty shocking)
