Holsters, belts and the like.

What's the best method to recondition such items without compromising integrity?

I bought this stuff called Effax at a high end horse show. It works great. It has 92 reviews that are 4.5-5.

Sorry for the long link. Its great stuff I use on my saddle and boots. I had not heard of it 'til I was at that show, and lots of people use it on high end saddles.($3-4K each) You can also use Murphys Oil Soap. Get a sponge, wet it a little and clean away. Then put your Effax on it.

You got it wet and dried it back out? I've gotten holsters and belts pretty wet. I just dry them and go on.

If you want to clean them, saddle soap.

If you want to wax them, atom balm, neutral shoe polish, or renaissance wax.

If you feel like it's dried too much and needs some oil a light coat of neatsfoot oil or saddlers oil. Be warned, oil softens leather. Too much can make a holster useless. Light coat.

Thanks CJ. Yeah, I got dooshed in a downpour with my Judge out in the woods. The Judge is stainless, but the holster isn't. :D That was a couple days ago and the holster is still damp.

I take mink oil and carefully rub down the belt loop parts, as it makes them more pliable and they take form and snuggle better. But I keep it off the holster part cause I don't want it to make it all floppity and soft. So I was curious on what to use with the gun holding part.

PS- Besides pocket carry, I only owb at 3:30/4 o'clock. So I don't know how well my mink oil trick would work with iwb/small of back/appendix etc. So users be careful. Don't **** up your holster.

Most makers put a light coat of oil on at some point in the process. Wetting, molding, drying and dyeing with alcohol based dyes takes a toll on the natural oils in the hide. I put 3 light coats of a wax/oil mix on mine as part of the finish process. Then seal them and wax them to get a bit of the shine back. It's one of the reasons we don't recommend extra oil be put on them.

My guess is that the pocket may stiffen up a bit when it dries. The moisture can move some of the stuff in the hide around and when it dries it stiffens back up. As long as you don't see any weird surface cracking it should soften back up with wear. But most of the time surface cracking is because it's dry rotting. Dry and age is probably worse than wet. Think about saddles, bike seats, and all the stuff that gets wet regularly. It's just cleaned and air dried.

If it's a Fat Boy belt don't put anything on it's already got the fat & tallow in it. Same leather as in draft horse harnesses. Soaking it won't hurt it.
As Jason said be careful with oil on the Holster. I use Saddlers Oil
From Weavers. With oil a little goes a long way. Monk oil contains silicone & I don't recommend it.

Same thing with "neatsfoot oil" vs. "neatsfoot compound". Had a few draft guys I work with tell me to avoid the "compound" since it has "stuff" in it that will hurt the leather with many coats.
