Areas within the total eclipse path are advising people within a roughly 2 hour drive that traffic may be unusually heavy with people trying to get to observation areas. Heavy traffic always means crashes, crashes mean even slower traffic.

Most of us have read "Day of Wrath".

Just sayin...

We are trying to get our work schedule adjusted to have all of our drivers back at the shop by noon or 1 at the latest.

The reason we don't want them on the road during the lead up and the actual eclipse is I know damn well, people will be looking out of their car windows while they drive and causing accidents.

My wife's work is putting their center on lockdown from 1-4pm. (It's a daycare.) No children or staff will be allowed to exit the building, and no parents will be permitted to pick up their kids.

I'm sure that's gonna go over real well. I had a sidebar with the director, and she said it's because they can't prevent the children from looking at the sun and suffering eye damage, and in turn having parents file suit.

Idiots.
Just curious, did you ask her how they currently keep the children from looking at the sun?

Yep. My dad doesn't read and even he read it. And was ready to shoot something at the end. Glad I'm off work that day

Nope, I don't have a dog in the fight. I can see both sides. Reasonable parents just want their kids, but the dumbasses who are sue-happy are the reason they're not letting them out, because SOMEONE would find a way to sue them if their kid ended up with vision damage. They personally handed all parents a piece of paper explaining it, and it tells them if you want to pick your kid up, do it before 1pm or after 4pm, because the building will be on lockdown; nobody in or out.

Thats what I dont get. The sun is out everyday, all day. No law suits due to the children being out in, or even possibly looking at the sun.

The eclipse is not magnifying the sun. Damn pansies.

If the center goes into lockdown because of a celestial event, and a parent is caught in traffic and can't get there until 1:15, then the center denies a parent access to his/her child, essentially holding said child hostage for 3 hours, is that not kidnapping?

They can treat it like an active shooter event

This is the part that puzzles me -- it seems that if the center can call a lockdown for the eclipse (i.e. nothing at all like an active shooter event), then they can do it for (almost) any reason.

I'm not upset about it - no dog in this fight. It just seems as if the parent(s) should have the upper hand in deciding when they can see their own kids.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a daycare center can legally prevent a non-problematic parent access to his/her child.

Technically, no, because the parent failed to plan ahead and leave early enough. Just got off the phone with my wife, and apparently the center already cleared it with NC State. They can treat it like an active shooter event, and allow none other than first responders to enter/exit the building.

Time for a new day care center it sounds like to me.

Im like you, no dog in this fight, just the stupidity that comes out is amazing to me

Okay guys, inform who you want and let those you don't cook the camera in their cell phones. I have two idiot ps who say they're not going to need special glasses since they are just going to video the eclipse with their phones and play it back. They don't have special filters or such they are just going to point it and record. One said that the guy at the store said it should be fine and the other said she heard the same thing. I ain't no rocket scientist but I do know that the amount of exposure will damage the electronic circuitry in a very short time and if they run it for say 2 1/2 minutes of the peak eclipse they will burn the cmos chip especially when the camera lense focuses it onto the chip ... think how you use to burn thing with a magnifying glass. Anyway, I decided to mess with a couple retail stores and see what they are saying. The Apple Store made no bones about it " Do Not Do It! It is not a warranty cover damage". Then I called around to some cell phone stores and three said it should be okay, one said that's what he's going to do and one said the same thing as the Apple Store. Funny thing is each place said they had extra phones just in case. I can see a profitable month coming because idiots burn out their cameras and have to replace them so they can post their FARCEBook updates, IDIOTgram pics and such.

Oh yeah, this goes for the expensive DSLRs as well as good old 35mm SLRs unless you run the correct filters and then even on long term usage and being pointed toward the eclipse, heat can build up inside the lense assembly and mess up the lense itself.

Pass it on to who you care about and if you are like me let the idiots, snowflakes and such screw up their smartphones.

No, stupid should hurt (no matter the age, :D) and stupid should be expensive. Only way to instill life long lessons

As far as the kids/daycare thing goes, I can understand why, even if I don't agree. Folks who work at a daycare have a tough row to hoe, as every parent has a vastly different idea of what's best for their little angel, and they each expect the daycare to be run by their rules.

I remember just a few years ago getting called in (i'm a tree care professional) to talk to parents of kids at a daycare about the trees in the playground. 1/2 the parents didn't want any trees taken down, including the unhealthy ones, because a little sun exposure might give little suzie-q skin cancer, and she needed to be shaded 100% of the time. The other half of the parents wanted -every- tree taken down, because a tree branch might fall on little johnny's head. Neither group of parents was willing to budge. (I eventually just gave them a report, saying "this is my assessment of each tree's health. You have the information. Ya'll figure out what to do on your own" )

Too many cooks in the kitchen. If you're that particular about your kids...why are you letting strangers raise them for you?

ok ok ok ok, my head hurts on this subject, but I honestly gots to know, ( may need to start a poll)... I have a step daughter who was 4 when she took over me, so I didnt get a chance to teach her not to look at the sun.

So, at what age do you teach kids not to look at the sun? I always assumed that it was a self teaching moment in the very early days of life.

Another thing to consider....

I have no doubt there's going to be a good number of folks parked on the shoulder of the highways....grouped together.

Seeing as how terrorists have become fond of plowing into a mass of people with a vehicle, may be best to have a watchful eye, should you be in one of those groups.

May sound far-fetched, but I guarandamntee you they've thought about it.

My thoughts about this and the book were less about schools, more about what the attack on the schools did to the highways and "phase 2" of their plan.

We have two upcoming well publicized and anticipated coast to coast traffic events along major highways, one prior to the eclipse, one after, one in each direction. All it takes is one crash, planned or not, to turn miles of highway into gridlock - and more importantly, sitting ducks.

I'm just going to go the mountians and sit on the deck with a drink. If the workd ends Monday due to mass human stupidity I intend to die up on the deck with an empty bottle and a pile of brass. Is there any scientific data about shooting accuracy and booze intake?

According to one study, "You'll shoot your eye out!" :)

No, but here is the issue with the eclipse

"On a sunny day, if you were to look directly at the sun, you would know to look away after a split second because of the pain caused by the brightness. During most of a solar eclipse, the sun will be partly blocked by the moon, making it less bright. This tricks your eyes into being able to look at the sun for an extended period of time.

“You can stare at the sun during an eclipse for 10 minutes, and it doesn’t hurt. You can just look at it, and it’s really cool to look at it, but that whole time you’re literally burning the cells off your retina,” said Vike Vicente, a Washington pediatric ophthalmologist, which means an eye doctor for kids. “And once they’re burned, there’s no repair, there’s no fix for it.”"

Don't look up, even when wearing appropriate eye protection.
The NSA will use facial recognition to find you.

Day care is voluntary. Parents choose to put their children in a facility and sign over certain responsibilities to the day care. The lock down has been announced, so the parents do not have to take the child to the facility that day if they disagree with the policy. The parents should let the day care do the job the parents hired them to do.

In some situations, the presence of parents may very easily put other people in harm's way.
