Something to think about.....

That's not an American thing, but (mostly) global situation.

While I don't disagree with it, I don't think it's apples to apples.

One is driven by what the market will support and while I've grown to despise all professional sports the rest of America seems perfectly willing to spend thousands of dollars for a single ticket to an event or $50 on a onesie for their infant because it has some team's logo on it. I played sports as a growing up and into college and if you told me that I could make $60k/year playing sports I would be all over it but getting paid millions and million to play any sport in my mind is absurd.

The other is a government job where the salary is decided by a bunch of worthless, self serving politicians who would rather further their career or their cause then try to support people doing actual work and providing services to the community. I disagree with a lot of things that cops do/can do but honestly most of them get into law enforcement because they want to help people. I highly doubt most politicians can say the same. Maybe we should take some of the bullet shields used in politicians cars/offices/houses and put them in cop cars where they might actually make a difference.

I have no idea if the indicated pay is correct, and I suspect that the pension plan more than triples the value of the compensation package.

In any case, I haven’t heard about any shortage of applicants or officers, so it seems like the free market at work.

CMPD is short 180 officers. I believe NCSHP is short about 100 as well.

Are those numbers significant? If there are 1,000 total officers than it’s a problem, if there are 5,000 thennot so much.

Glassdoor says average pay for Charlotte office is over $50k, salary.com says NCSHP is $48k. Not perfect sources. $35k could be a about a starting salary I suppose.

Pay scale doesnt sound to bad. Any occupation out there has its dangers.

I dont see cabbies nor 7-11 clerks getting that kind of pay. Those jobs have way more employee victims than law enforcement

I stopped watching sports in the late 90's because of this. To take a family of 4 to see a game back in the 80's was pretty cheap. Then in the 90's prices started to skyrocket. Why? Well, for this reason. Some assclown that can throw a ball or put one in a basket makes over 50 million a year. And, all the endorsing sponsors have to get that cash to pay somewhere. Where do they get it? Why from the consumer when they raise the price of items co cover their "investment". Pro sports can bite me. I haven't watched anything sports related since 1996.

My best friend is a NCHP and pay is more in the $50k range and he's still underpaid. He's shot and been shot in 10yrs on the road. A vest saved his life.

$50k after 10 years sucks. I know LEO's making $85k after 7 years. The LEO pay in the southeast is way behind other areas of the country.

Pretty much describes it to me!

Supply and demand. Simple stuff. Easy to produce cops, teachers and firefighters. Hard to produce people with over the top athletic skills. Those with unique talents get paid more money. It works in other areas as well. Why does the sales guy that can bring in millions of dollars of revenue make more than the administration people in the office? Why do the top chefs get paid more than the bus boy? This isn't complicated stuff. And it doesn't make the higher earners bad people or the cops, teachers and firefighters saints.

Short according to who? Or whom! Not sure on that one. Where is our grammar nazis?

Anyway I drove around this week and saw plenty of NC State employees in fast cars.

$50/year is a pretty extreme exaggeration. Who is that guy? Is there a guy making that right now? Not in baseball, football or hockey. Maybe James, but I'm not sure he's even making that. Guess you really haven't beem watching.
:D

That's why this is a great country. Those underpiad employees can go work for other institutions or even move to areas where the pay is higher. Maybe they should move to NYC or Chicago. Bet they'd get paid more and love the working conditions.

I can't speak for CMPD, but I do know one Correctional facility that was short 178 Correctional Staff. That was last month so I'm sure they have hired one or two since then. All of the veteran staff have left, even most of the ones with 15+ years with the state and were within sight of a reduced pension at the 20 year mark . It's gotten so stupid that it's indescribable. But, YES, the state will gladly pay big money for someone to fly up and down the road, accomplishing nothing. It's only getting worse for those few that remain that have some honor and a good work ethic and I feel sorry for them.

Im well aware.
Not sure why you quoted me, shouldve quoted the OP or something.
My point was that this isnt an "American" problem, but one that can be found in almost every nation.
