What's a good online source to get info about FAL rifles? Particularly about which type upper receiver you need to build from a parts kit. I see type 1 and type 2, both with or without carry handle cuts and several other options. Are DSA uppers any good?

I was over at a buddies auto shop this morning and he had 2 big boxes of gun parts sitting in the floor that someone gave him. He was told they were Israeli AR10's which did not sound right and as I started looking at the lowers and barrels, I thought they looked like FAL's. So I came home and looked on line to verify it. So they maybe Israeli FAL's. The only marking on the assembled lowers was a 4 digit number, maybe a s/n?, and I did see 7.62 and some other marks on one of the barrels. Looks like the uppers were saw cut to demil instead of torch cut. Some of the barrels also had bipods attached.

This would be one place to look at.

There is/was a guy in Rock Hill (on one of the old forums) that would be a good contact.
But I don't remember his name.

DSA has had some issues, Gunplumber (Mark Graham) on falfiles loathes them.

However for a new upper they're basically the only game in town. Iirc the forged uppers have had some spec issues recently, but cast have been ok.

Check this for israeli receivers: https://dsarms.com/p-17088-dsa-sa58...uto-fal-receiver-type-1-carry-handle-cut.aspx

I built a Imbel kit on a type 3 a few years back w/o issue, amd then a second Imbel kit on a Imbel upper I picked up on gunbroker before the prices went nuts.

Based on my experience with my cast type 3, I'd not hesitate to get another.

If you want to spring for it, grab an Imbel or DS prefixed DSA upper (forged and made by LMT). Last few Imbel uppers I've seen have been going over 800, and LMT made ones beyond that.

They're not difficult to build with the right tools. If your buddy doesn't want the kits he can give em to me. :)

I read that DSA is discontinuing their forged receivers and going cast only

Saw cut? Interesting...
Search on FALfiles and you will find a thread or 2 on the saw cut kits that came in... ATF was trying to round them up at one time since the regs called for torch cut. Seems they were quite easy to "reassemble" and would actually run for a short while with the happy switch activated. IIRC a local 'smith was the target of ATF for a while over this. Pretty sure he beat it though.
FALs are beautiful firearms in their own strange way!

I had Mark build a Izzy light barrel kit on their (DSA) Israeli marked cast receiver. He advised that short of going into battle with it, they were safe and good to go. Knowing his comfort in speaking his mind on things (!!) I trusted him and have enjoyed the rifle.
