My local has one of these that is in decent condition. Needs a good cleaning but that's it. It has what I think are aftermarket target style sights. The front is covered with a tiny circle instead of a standard style and it has a peep sight that is adjustable mounted to the far rear of the receiver. They have $100 on it. I'm very tempted because I want a 22 with irons to play with. Not looking for a bulleye rifle. Should I pick it up?

Good to very good value on the model 84 is in the $100-$125 range, so you might be able to pick it up for less. Offer $85 cash and see if they bite.

Just for clarification, "Springfield" was Savage/Stevens and not Springfield Armory. They made a link of budget .22 rifles under the Springfield Arms name back in the 1940's.

Fun guns... my father has one, albeit not a model 84.

Cool. I'm heading there tomorrow and if it's still there I will pick it up. Should make a cool little project :)

I picked it up. Got it for $85 otd. Has a pretty nice trigger, breaks at 3 1/2lbs. I did the best I could at a cheap reblue. My first try. Its ok.... I redid the stock too. Waiting on the poly to dry. I will add pics of the redo tomorrow.

Here are a few pics of how she was when I got her. PS don't mind the dirty bench...

Nice find. I never get that lucky.

Not the greatest thing but I like it. I used the perma blue kit. It's ok. Going to oil it everyday for a few days so it builds up in the steel again. Need a new mag. Won't feed from the old one. Hopefully tomorrow I can get out and see how she does on some paper. Went bang for the 10 test rounds :) :)

Oh and I add sling mounts just because.... Might take her squirrel hunting :)

Question. I used the perma blue kit to refinish the rifle. I did everything it said too. The rifle had a fine film of rust on it this morning. It wiped right off with a oil rag. is this normal? Should I keep wiping it down till the oils build up in the steel? Or should I just duracoat it...... ;)

Rust blue it. Not that tough to do.

Got to the indoor range today. Only 20 or 23yds but she shot good. I'm very happy. Need to adjust the sights slightly back to the left. Really like agiula super extra.

I have the same model rifle minus the peep sight. Given to me in the mid 80's by a friend.

It is currently in a hundred pieces for restoration.

Very nice!! Do you by chance have a link to how the heck you take apart the bolt? I Haven't been able to find one and mine really needs the bolt taken apart and properly cleaned. Thanks

Ohhh man, that was a few years ago so I am trying to remember.
I have a book that showed the breakdown and I haven't found it after moving several times.
I know the front of the bolt is pinned to the rear and wasn't hard to remove.
Give me a few and I will snap a pic of the bolt parts.

Here are 2 groups at 50yds. I'm impressed. I think I'm going to slap a scope on her and see what I can do at 100yds. I'm damn blind all I was doing was put the 8" target in the center of the front sight! Lol had to adjust the sights some, seems to have been sighted in for 25yds. The best group is about 1/2" if u don't count the flyer..... :) ;)

I got mine back from my mothers barn after 20 some odd not so kinds years. Got most of the restoration done and decided to take the bolt apart and broke the mainspring retainer, lost interest and put it in a gun sock in the back of the safe.

I haven't looked at it in about 10 years, but you guys have renewed my interest, will have to see what I've lost and order up some parts..

I got a BSA sweet 22 6x18x44 scope mounted and got to shoot her some more. I used some higher quality ammo this time to see if it makes a difference. Man I see what @The Green Heron was saying. All groups are at 50yds. To me these are awesome groups!! All around the 3/4" or smaller. All are 10 shot groups from a prone with a bipod and bag. Looks like the sk rifle match did the best. I can't wait to test these ammos in my savage b22 fv-sr. This little old rifle keeps surprising me. She had some issues with extracting these shells. I'm going to see about ordering new extractor and springs.
