I keep forgetting to come here!! I need to remedy that. Does everyone still check both sites??

Well other than a crossbow, I've never really shot a standard style bow. So I decided to start with traditional archery. Not sure I want to get into compound bows...more interested in recurve and especially long bow! So I went to the local archery Store, in this case Sportsmans in Rock Hill and Tony recommended the PSE Black Hawk to start out, so he got me kitted out and let me shoot the bow a few times...it's a 40lb bow (tried a 30lb but it was too light) and I could get on paper with it!
Now I guess I'll head over to the indoor range today at Southern Draw and see about some lessons maybe, or just shoot and try to get used to how to aim this thing.
Something new at age 58! Looking forward to working on this! Anyone else start shooting traditional archery at an older age? How are you making out with it!

Ha! Yea, I hear ya....but I HAVE to go back....I hate missing anything!

I shoot a Bear Super Kodiak Not good at it, but arrows come out... and maybe at 50, I'm not old either.
Do love slinging arrows with it. Find you one of those exercise rubber band things, and practice drawing with it. Your shoulders will thank you.

Hey Mazer,
If you are looking to move up the poundage scale a little, shoot me a PM. I have three longbows and some extra Flemish twist strings that I'd love to move due to my bad wing. I'd really like to see these bows put into someone's hands that would appreciate the artform of trad archery. I have a John Schultz American Longbow 65# @28", A Howard Hill Big Five 80# @ 28", and a Ron Maulding custom that was made for Bob Wesley that is 84# @ 28". I used to love shooting the Hill Indirect Aiming style with these bows as the Hill Big Five and the Maulding made for a very close aiming gap with their higher draw weight.

I would recommend a bow in the 40lb range. Its easy to hold at anchor and to practice a smooth consistent release. I think the best value today is the Samick Sage take down recurve.

I recommend spending some time on youtube watching the trad archery videos by Wolfie Hughes. He is the real deal and his style of shooting and philosophy is very in line with mine.

Learn the basics of Stance, focus, shot sequence, anchor, release, follow through.

Trad archery is a life long journey and to get decently consistent with your shooting you have to practice often and be consistent in the things you do. Many shooters have varied styles (split finger, three under, gap shooting. string walking) but the things all shooters have to have and do every time no matter what your style is have a solid repeatable anchor, clean release and laser beam like focus on a spot on the target you are shooting at. The old adage of aim small miss small is never truer than it is in trad archery.

BTW, I am also 58 and have been a trad archery shooter for over 20 years and I still get frustrated at my lack of focus, over thinking things and inconsistency at times with my shooting, but that is part of the journey.

A beginner can never go wrong with lessons if you have a place to get them. Avoiding bad habits at the start is a good thing. I'm more into strings and wheels though. Next time you come up bring the bow and we can shoot a bit in the back yard.

BurnedOutGeek & Burt -> I hear ya.... I KNOW, but I spent a lot of time there and it's hard to leave "cold turkey".
Bull Durham -> Yes sir! I plan to go to a Long Bow, and heavier poundage at some point once I figure out what I am doing! I definitely would consider purchasing one or more of your bows.
pirate -> I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do, I believe the PSE and sage bows (at least at the beginner stage bow that I purchased) are the same bows made at the same mfg. I've seen some of Wolfies videos and a few others...I need to shoot more to appreciate what he is talking about. I don't know anything about stance, anchors and such....which is why I want to see about some beginner lessons.
chiefjason -> absolutely...been trying to get a free day to get up to you, I have 2 holsters I need made! I'd love to try some shots where you are, but remember....i'm not that accurate yet!!

Yeah it saves me money not browsing classified ads all day so it's a win win

Mazer, a 40lb bow is perfect. I choot a 52lb Lofton long bow. My daughter choots a 40lb Sage. Both of us shoot instinctive, and I highly recommend that you do the same. You don't aim a baseball, you just throw it... same ting wi' trad bows. Find someone who can train ya on chootin' instinctive.

40 is good. Ut is also the minimum in NC for hunting.
I shot 45# now. My first was a sammick Polaris 40#.
MY one piece recurve is a Bear Grizzly. Very nice. Weighs slightly less than 2 pounds.
Have a blast.
I have to buy my wife a cross bow. She has arthritis and can't draw a tradbow.

I need to get a lot better before considering hunting! But I shot a bit today and my groups are shrinking a bit! So I'm liking that!
