For a school project I acquired a Steyr Pro Hunter SBS composite stock rifle in 7mm Rem Mag. The barrel needs crowning, it will also be threaded, and the stock will get a FDE Cerakote finish.

Currently it has no optic, or mounts. It is drilled and tapped, and anything for a Browning A-bolt will fit. This is my first potentially long range platform, and I'd like to build a modest distance gun while I'm using it as a Cerakote project.

Bases, or a rail? I'm assuming a rail, but thought I'd ask.

Also, What about an optic? I'm not spending more than $150 at this time. Konos seems to have some options that look well reviewed. I doubt I can afford a 1000yd scope, so what about 500yds? I don't know anything about optics just yet, but 4x14 was suggested.

I'd appreciate some advice that would work within these parameters. Thanks.

I have a Prohunter SBS in 243 Win. Nice rifle, great safety. Unfortunately, the barrel is pressed into the receiver, rather than threaded. That makes barrel replacement a gunsmith custom modification.
A $150 scope budget puts you in low end Chinese glass. 7 mag is a hard on scopes. The turrets and tension spring are the weak points at that price range. Quality will be hit or miss with any manufacturer. Pick a scope that has a very good replacement warranty and expect to replace it at least once.
When you first open the scope box, “condition” the turrets by running them back and forth between the stops about 10 times. That will exercise the springs and distribute any lubricant uniformly over the spindle threads. Then see if it will hold zero.
