I've been looking around for a while for an entry level, high capacity, 9mm 1911 to use in Limited division USPSA. What do you guys think of the STI Hawk 5.0?
Here is a link:

Are there any other alternatives for a double stack 1911 that is in the same $1500 price range or cheaper? I've heard that Rock Island Armory and Para both have double stacks but are they worth checking out?

Thank you in advance for any advice/opinions.

STI Edge is what you want. You can find many on the net for sale gently used in the 1200-1600 range.
The edge is 40 cal which you can load a major or minor load for. The Hawk will be minor scoring only, which can be a negative after you learn the division and gamesmanship.

Keep an eye out in the BST section on ( https://forums.brianenos.com/forum/58-bes-vendor-tents/ ) forum, a few show up from time to time

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of advice that I needed. I didn't even notice the Edge model when I was browsing the STI website. There are so many! And I should have taken into consideration that 9mm would have limited me to minor power factor scoring. Thanks again.

Just for sheets and giggles, maybe also have a look at CZ Tactical Sport, CZ Tactical Sport Orange, and the Tanfoglio Limited.

The CZ Tac Sport and Tanfo come in closer to 1,000$, which would leave a generous amount for spendy magazines and rig.

Thank you for the suggestions but I really want a double stack 1911 style gun.

You want him to pick up a pair of skinny jeans also?

I heard he’s been seen with a (gasp) posse of PCCers!

*puts on flame proof pants*

Have you tried an XD(m)? Very similar grip angle to a 1911/2011, same capacity and 60% of the cost. I shot XD(m) for years and decided to upgrade to a 2011. I actually bought one of @Mike Overlay guns. I shot it in a couple matches and found that -aside from being more finicky - I gained nothing from switching platforms.

Next thing someone is gonna say is "it's the shooter , not the gun...." Or some crap like that.

Long live the expensive 2011!!!

Well, two known grandmasters have viewed this thread.
And both shoot Tanfos.

So expensive 2011’s apparently don’t help at all.

Fact. There is only 1 Grandmaster. And he rolls with the Furious Five on his squad. No info available on if they rock Glocks, Taurii or Tanfoglio.

That looks like an HK crew to me.

Check out that site. It is hosted by Practiscore. Some decent deals there.

I ordered a 9mm STI Edge from Dawson Precision. It should arrive at my ffl today. So excited!
I know I'll be at a disadvantage being scored minor power factor but 40S&W costs a lot more to reload. At my beginner skill level, I believe that additional practice will be more advantageous than major power factor scoring. Plus it gives me an excuse to buy another gun if I ever become competitive.

Cool, I think you're really going to like it.

The gun was filthy as it came out of the box! No doubt it was test fired at the factory. The gentleman I talked to at Dawson Precision told me their gunsmith will test fire the gun also to check function before shipping.

I detail stripped and cleaned lubricated the pistol. It's a beautiful gun, very fine fit and finish. The clearances between the frame slide and barrel are very tight but it locks/unlocks and racks with very little effort. The trigger breaks very crisp at 3 pounds, 10 ounces but has a lot of take-up. I'll fix that soon with a take-up and over-travel adjustable trigger from STI. Can't wait to shoot it this weekend. Hopefully it functions 100%.

Well, did you shoot it yet?

I ran 350 rounds through the gun this morning. It was shooting way low so I adjusted the rear sight 9 clicks. Windage was perfect. Now it shoots exactly point of aim at 25 yards. The gun is stupid easy to shoot accurately. I shot 1 round at a freshly painted steel target at 25 yards. Then I used that first shot as an aiming point for 4 more rounds and ended up with a 1-1/2" group. The sights are very sharp/clear and the trigger is super crisp 3-1/2 lbs and predictable.

I did have a couple issues though. The first round in the magazine failed to feed on 4 occasions. I wish I kept track of which magazines did this. The round would make it only halfway into the chamber. Bumping the rear of the slide would not chamber the round. I'll run an Arkansas stone on the breech face just in case there is a burr. The other issue I had was one of the magazines would not lock the slide back reliably. It is a spare mag that I ordered from MidwayUSA.

Other than those 2 issues the Edge ran very well!
