STI Hawk 5.0 2011 for beginner in USPSA

I ran 350 rounds through the gun this morning. It was shooting way low so I adjusted the rear sight 9 clicks. Windage was perfect. Now it shoots exactly point of aim at 25 yards. The gun is stupid easy to shoot accurately. I shot 1 round at a freshly painted steel target at 25 yards. Then I used that first shot as an aiming point for 4 more rounds and ended up with a 1-1/2" group. The sights are very sharp/clear and the trigger is super crisp 3-1/2 lbs and predictable.

I did have a couple issues though. The first round in the magazine failed to feed on 4 occasions. I wish I kept track of which magazines did this. The round would make it only halfway into the chamber. Bumping the rear of the slide would not chamber the round. I'll run an Arkansas stone on the breech face just in case there is a burr. The other issue I had was one of the magazines would not lock the slide back reliably. It is a spare mag that I ordered from MidwayUSA.

Other than those 2 issues the Edge ran very well!
2011 mags need to be tuned. No one I know of has there 2011 lock back on an empty mag.

You really dont want the slide to lock back, trust me.

The spring tension will settle some and that first round semi issue will stop

Thank you for the tip. I found a few videos on youtube about how to tune the mags. I'll give it a try before next weekend.

Why is it bad to have the slide lock back on the last round?

Over exertion jambs up the mags/gun. Also possible to break the ejector from the top round smacking it.

I never would have guessed that reloading with the slide back could cause over insertion and broken ejector problems. Thanks for the insight.
Nothing on a 2011 to stop over insertion other than the ejector. With 23 rd mags (9mm- 140mm with guts and pads) you shouldn’t run the pistol dry and if you have, the wheels have already come off on that stage. No sense in breaking your pistol and compounding the problems.

Ok, now I get it. That's why I saw some limited and open guys changing half empty mags when on the move. I better buy a couple more mags and mag holders.

Yes. I would say 4 is a good number and 3 pouches. That’s what I run. Almost never need that last one but if you do then you’ll need it real bad! Always start a stage with one more than you think you need. That way if you fumble one or have a malfunction where it’s easier to dump the mag and grab a new one then you have the option. Always faster to grab from the belt rather than scoop off the ground!

My STI Edge did it's first USPSA match last night. The gun ran great but I have a very long way to go to be competitive. Lot's of Deltas, Mikes, no shoots and almost DQ'd at one point(I almost violated the 180 rule when running from one firing position to another). It was still a lot of fun even with all my mistakes and I'm looking forward to developing my skills. Maybe I need to throttle it down a little bit and score better hits?

Nah - shoot fast. Run fast. Miss fast. JK - I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Outstanding. You survived.

Instead of slowing down, try calming down.
And if you always keep the muzzle pointed on the back berm/wall, you should be fine with the 180 while moving/running/ mag changes.

That's great advice, I need to stop hurrying myself so that can think and act with clarity after that buzzer goes off.

Updates??

I've fired a couple thousand rounds through the Edge. It is running perfectly. No malfs after I started to use more crimp in my crimp die. The trigger now breaks at a very consistent 3-1/2 lbs and is just amazing. So smooth and breaks like a glass rod. Very quick and crisp reset. I adjusted most of the take-up out of the trigger and trimmed the grip safety to match. Amazingly easy to shoot accurately. 50 yard shots are a piece of cake on 8"steel. The best purchase I have made so far, at least pistol wise.

Before: all guns are fun.

Now: spoiled on race guns and huge culling of gun herd coming in near future, to afford moar race guns. Distain for normal guns imminent!!
